good tip.
kidman was good in 'The Others' as well.
i think the genre fits her.
better than comedy i reckon.

nicole is a godness anyway. she plays in my nr 1 favourite movie, which is dogville by von trier, one of the best of all time imo. who didn't see that movie, quickly grab a torrent.
one of those movies who makes you cry of anger and will change your mood big time at least for a week

much prefer melancholia

and i am not axiomatically resistant to dogma school. tho i do prefer seeing something live on the stage.

agreed.
the way she plays in that movie, i think very few hollywood actresses would be capable of such a performance.

Anyone seen Interstellar yet? If so, thoughts?

Have not seen it yet but planning on doing so. Maybe this weekend. The public review shows universal acclaim with a 9.1 out of 10 from around 100.000 ratings on IMDB, which is an impressive number. With time I suspect it will get down but never bellow 8.5. The Critic is a bit more varied with a 73 Metascore out of 100.

I'm planning on seeing it tomorrow afternoon.

I've read and heard many reviews on it and to me they have been a bit more mixed. The two regular critics on BBC's Film 2014 programme were far from enamoured with it. I've seen 2 and 3 star ratings giving to it.

It's an ambitious movie to pull off even by Nolan and with the huge hype it's probably been judged by sky high level standards as a result.

Part I is awesome. Part II is saved by great cinematography and to some extent good music. However I understand that Kubrick wished to show the contrast between the base and the anarchy on the battlefield.

In the same genre as Part I of FMJ, I highly recommend you Sidney Lumet's The Hill, starring Sean Connery in his best role, for me. Underrated film !

Some see it as an anti-militarist film. I think it's more subtle than that. It's about abuse of power. While Kubrick was a staunch anti-militarist.

By the way, you have watched/plan to watch the two best of Kubrick, for me. ;)

By the way², it's not because a film has a high rating on IMDB that it's necessarily good. But I guess you realise that. :p;)

I thinks it a good movie in its own right but not one that I would say is worthy of the hype generated.

The sci-fi element of the movie goes very deep and it left me scratching my head once or twice at times. In the end it comes together some bit as the show concludes.

Even though there is a strong human story from a family aspect, if you're not in anyway shape interested in sci-fi, I would stay well clear. With the sci-fi so deep, I can't see it being universally accepted. Even in the cinema today I heard many people critical of the movie afterwards and pointed out the far fetched scenes which to be fair you should be braced for in a movie of this type.

Overall looking at in general, it was a huge movie to pull off. Nolan while not perfect did a decent job with it.

It's definitely worth watching.

I think it was slightly disappointing, though I would certainly recommend to go see it.
The story is definitely fascinating (although interlaced with a ****load of american 'pass the bucket' morale), and the images are spectacular all the way.

negatives: too loud (the music sucks), too pompous, too much cheap morale, too long, lack of humor, Anne Hathaway.

I think this Henry Barnes (Guardian) review nails it:
"Interstellar, a near three-hour whopper of a picture, powers through its plot holes and barrels through the corn. It’s a glorious spectacle, but a slight drama, with few characters and too-rare flashes of humour. It wants to awe us into submission, to concede our insignificance in the face of such grand-scale art. It achieves that with ease. Yet on his way to making an epic, Nolan forgot to let us have fun."

or this one from Denby (New Yorker)
Over all, “Interstellar,” a spectacular, redundant puzzle, 167 minutes long, makes you feel virtuous for having sat through it rather than happy that you saw it."

Interesting you say that, I thought the same thing watching it. I found at times the dialogue was hard to hear over it and at one point even thought it was just a problem with the cinema showing it. I have since seen yesterday that this was a more general view worldwide and Nolan has come out in defence of the movie over it.

I thought one of the strong points was Jessica Chastain's role in it. She's a bit of latecomer to the big movie scene in recent years which is surprising when you look at her very good performances over that period in Zero Dark Thirty, Take Shelter and The Debt.

in-friggin-deed.
the organs were too much/loud, simply distracting.
from the web:
"Any professional would have spoken up and said, 'We can't hear the dialogue,'" offers the insider, adding that the biggest problem could be "it takes you out of the movie."

agree she played good. Haven't seen any of those three, but have seen her in Tree of Life.

I'm sorry I didn't see your reply. :)

Related to what you say about FMJ, I noticed that it was quite a transition from the bootcamp to Vietnam. In the first instants I was left a bit clueless but got into it, eventually. I assume Kubrick's intention was precisely that as you say - to show the contrast of worlds and realities. I'll try to watch ''The Hill'': I read it is set in Africa for a change, I'm interested. And happy it has a more subtile meaning to it than the obvious some can't get past to. Thanks a lot for that! :)

Haha, yes, I'm aware of it. :D IMDB has some ridiculous ratings, but I guess it's the price of letting the people have the vote. ;)

That was hilarious. I was in the thatre in Luxembourg with 3/4 portuguese people and they cracking up, sometimes at random stuff where I had no idea why they were cracking up. But my teacher told me it got a mixed reception in Portugal - apparently a lot of people found it somewhat offensive?

I watched Capitães de Maio recently - pretty good! Was a bit confused at times but still

Another portuguese-related movie I saw earlier this year was "Les Grandes Ondes" - a bit odd but quite funny!

I can only imagine. I did not watch it at the cinema but at home with the family and it was time well spent. We also found it hilarious and most importantly, smart. Some lines can only be catched by the Portuguese, I guess. :)

Some snobs may have though it was offencive because they couldn't associate with the film and failed to realize it was a depiction of the common Portuguese emigrant. There were those who did not get it and those who didn't like how we were portrayed. It's that some people don't like the emigrant at all and are ashamed of them, thinking they somehwat cause the entire country to be stereotyped. This is my guess.

But overall the reception was positive. Rita Blanco is one of my favourite actresses.

I think you mean Capitães de Abril (Capitaines d'Avril)? :) I never watched it, but it's nice to know you liked it. I sort of have avoided watching most 25th of April-related films and documentaries because they usually are very biased and don't just present us the facts and a story. I will watch it.

I wonder how you're so knowledgable in the Portuguese culture, from literature to cinematography. Is it because there is a strong Portuguese presense where you live (which I take for granted given you're from Luxembourg, right?), or because you're interested in foreign culture in general? Or both? You even have a detail of The Elephant's Journey cover as your avatar, which I think it's fascinating. :)

Cheers.
