Agreed. Quintana is pretty much a slightly better Gesink. He looks extremely mature physically, as Gesink did. Older than they are.
Ryo will love this comment.

Ryo doesn't understand that it's largely genetic and unrelated to years of racing.

Though Gesink would pretty much still be on the level he was before if it wasn't for a **** load of bad luck. Luck can make or break a career. this Vuelta Quintana was unlucky for the first time.

You should expect that. When a youngster comes through and is top almost immediately, a section of the fans claim they will be the best ever because "think how good they will be when they improve!" when statistically they've simply peaked at a young age.

I always wonder if those people haven't watched cycling for a long time, because those guys never improve much, and often they decline early as well. Which makes perfect sense since if they did improve they'd be Merckx or Coppi and that can't happen to one guy a year.

I can't really decide about Quintana. He's clearly showed a shed-load of potential, but the jury is still a bit out for me that he'll fulfil the expectations…don't know why, but I'm just not 100% convinced…

Interview with Nairito.

- These days riders try not to lose rather than take risks to win. (hits the nail on the head here)
- In the Vuelta ITT, there was a bit of gravel right before the corner where he crashed, so he had to go into that corner wider than he would have liked.
- Doesn't know yet which GT he will be riding apart from the Tour.
- Put in a good word for Ventoso for a contract extension (not 100% sure if I translated correctly).

If Quintana is smart he won't go near Italy in May. He's got his dream parcours for the Tour and might never get such an opportunity again. He still has a chance to win the Vuelta after that. I don't think he can beat Contador in the Giro, and I really don't think he can win the Tour after riding the Giro.

Unzué is calling the shots though, he decides.

And I think for every DS aside Italians Tour -----------> Giro.

Anyway Quintana himself said Tour is THE target after meeting Unzue. They won't risk it with Giro.

Contador would tear him apart in that TT.

Good on Nairo for helping Fran. It was not right the way the team [almost] treated him - glad to see him get another year.

I like it too, I think it increases the chance for Contador's double and for Quintana's Tour. This is bad for Froome and Nibali though.

Oh, and lol about Valverde not doing the Giro, ****ing dumbass.

Nairito to go for TOUR & VUELTA--- Giro is a no :(

Seems like Movistar have had a mature and productive first training camp. Sensible words from Valverde:

“Nairo is perfectly capable of winning the Tour,” Valverde said. “I can be close, but it can be more complicated, and that is why I am realistic. At the Tour, I will be there 100 per cent for Nairo, accompany him to the end and stick together to have an advantage over our rivals.”

No doubt, the deal will be a reciprocal one come Vuelta time. I'm really warming to this team. The thought of the carnage they could cause, particularly in July, is actually very exciting. But that might just me..

I'm with you. I think the thought here by some that Valverde will stab Quintana in the back is unfounded. With the depth that Movistar has, to have Valverde ride as strictly a domestique would be to waste a wild card that could be used to put the rival teams in a panic should he escape in a break or respond to attacks as he did on the early Vuelta stage that he won in convincing fashion. I'm a bit biased though in that I've always liked Valverde's class on the bike, regardless of his shortcomings.

I agree, Valverde should not be losing minutes riding purely as a dom in the first mountain stages. He should at least be close. I think it is gonna be a Tour of small differences, he's gonna be super useful if he can put the others on the back foot while Quintana can let the others work.

I like Valverde because he's the ultimate opportunist, even if there are lots of less than appealing characteristics. A guy like that can do serious damage and shake things up a bit. It'll make things a lot more interesting having him and Nairo in this dual role.

Not that sorry about the Giro though. Not a particular fan of Quintana, and I want AC to be as strong as possible at the Tour to make the stakes super-high for him (if, as I hope, he's already won the Giro). Should make for some great attacking riding on a more tactical TdF course than it might be if it were more TT heavy.

And Contador didn't even make the top-100 in the last Vuelta ITT. Easy peasy for Quintana to beat Contador in the Giro TT next year.
