We are talking about VO2 max territory of 91-93 mL/(kg?min). Maybe some experts can shed some light on this.

Obviously when they did the test for sure he was not on the program because nobody had a clue. Not even him.:)

Didn't Contador mesure around 90 in 09?

Maybe. I don't know. But 2009 tests could have been already questionable. You would have to go back 5 more years in time. Like in 2004. Do you have any data from those early years?

No, there a no exact numbers known, but he apparently tested alien-like at 20-years of age at ONCE. He exceeded the test-protocol.

Former ONCE and now Garmin-Transitions physiologist I

Thank you very much,appreciate it!

I recommend this interview to people who want to know who is Quintana. Its one of the best interviews and not only in sport.
Those stories from his earlier years are very rare.

Some nice information if you speak spanish:

http://www.eltiempo.com/bocas/nairo-quintana-en-entrevista-con-la-revista-bocas/13630275

He has repeated several times that he hates when the media says that he comes from a poor family or that he was poor when growing up. He says that he had everything in life and in the table. That he didn't need anything else. His father made sure that he didn't need anything else.

One last comment. 7 watts/kilo. They just didn't say the length of time of the test but I assume it was around 1 hour. Of course these are lab conditions. It would be impossible to do that on the road. That is like a nameplate horsepower for a machine. Then you have to apply efficiency and the road conditions. Even with all that they knew at a young age they had a rough diamond. And a very expensive one.:)

Thanks a lot Escarabajo for the link.

it's the same test as garmin has, which is build up to an hour in the end. I remember people laughing at me on this forum for years. not anymore..... acevedo had similar wattage and also edward beltran, rujano had even higher under aldo toni

Quintana, Froome, Horner, Rodriguez, Valverde, Contador, Nibali and Daniel Martin riding for GC in la Vuelta, what an awesome rooster it would be!

I seriously doubt than everyone of them will target the GC. Some may only ride it to train for the worlds. Just like Tony Martin, who enters the race every year and pulls out around stage 15.

Bici/ quote of Nairo Quintana said:
&#8220]ya estoy entrenando de nuevo[/U]”, dijo Quintana a Ciclismo en Asturias. “Intentaremos hacer una buena Vuelta. Seguramente esté también Alejandro Valverde y seremos los dos líderes y actuaremos según vaya la carrera”, confirmó.

Man this warrior is really going for it,I hope he won't be overtrained.

I can't remember a true mountain stage in this current Vuelta. Many single-mountain stages. That give chances to Purito.

But Movistar surely will be the strongest team by far so Nairo has to be the main favourite, the ITT shouldn't matter against Purito

The stage to La Farrapona is kind of real mountain stage (onoh 160km short),there are 5 1st cat (giro language: 2x2cat and 3x1cat:D) climbs. That should be good for Nairo_Of course there is no high altitude, but thats Vuelta...

The first two climbs are overrated, but the next two are definitely underrated:

Maybe good news from Movistar for Nairo
Alejandro Valverde said:
Speaking to Biciciclismo last weekend, Valverde recognised that “a point will come in the future when I will have to work for Nairo, and that won’t be a problem at all.” But for now, in the Tour, Valverde has everything to play for – for himself.
I wonder if the 'point' will be as soon as next year:confused:

doubt it. Movistar is strong enough to send Valverde to do the giro/Vuelta double and still have a awesome team for Nairo in the tour.
