I think he can Challenge Froome in the Tour and maybe take some time on him in the mountains. I think Quintana is the more consistent of the two in the third week, where Froome can have a couple of bad days.

i'm not sure there is any evidence to back this up. vuelta 11 - strong in the 3rd week, tour 12 - very strong in 3rd week, tour 13 - one bad day in 3rd week, vuelta 14 - strong in 3rd week.

its like one bad day with a hunger knock has now become gospel that froome is weak in the last week of a GC.

p.s. i'm discounting vuelta 12 as he clearly was shattered.

There was quite some hesitation in the group when he attacked and Contador, who was the only one to immediately respond, was placed badly in the group with several riders between him and Quintana. Once Contador got to the front they got quite close to him (near a right hairpin) then Quintana put his foot on the gas once more and Contador faded, yet still they kept behind Alberto. Of course they would probably blow up if they tried to follow Quintana, but my point is that no one did try.

The attack was perfect, he saw Contador badly placed in the group, and punished him. Impressive stuff.

So Quintana goes to Dwars, that means he'll skip Catalunya then? I was hoping, he will tested his leg against Froome in Catalunya. Now, looks like it's going to be Froome's show unless Contador can bounce back and hopefully improve to match Froome. Coz' I'm sure Froome's form is improving a lot by next week.

He's riding Pais Vasco, Valverde rides Catalunya..

It's stuff like yesterday's Dwars Door Vlaanderen that makes me really like him. Sure, he finished 78th out of 89 finishers, but that the point; he actually finished! He might as well have ridden the first few sections of cobbles and then called it a day.

Here's a quick quote from Anders Lund during the broadcast (slightly paraphrased, and translation is my own):

"He is completely fearless. I noticed him first time in Paris-Nice a few years ago, when I didn't really know who he was. If he wanted a wheel, he took it and didn't care if he was fighting with someone twice his size for it."

Sometimes I do wonder why they practise on the 'easy' flanders cobble instead of the 'hard' french cobble, which it's all about afterall.
Allthough it should give him a good idea about the fight for the first positions and riding on cobbles, it's not really the same.

Allthough it should give him a good idea about the fight for the first positions and riding on cobbles, it's not really the same.

The selected cobbles sections in the tour is probably much closer to some of the stuff in Belgium vs the real P-R deal. Quintana would not survive a real P-R.

They don't have an other option. Roubaix is the only race with the 'same' French cobbles, but it is way too hard and useless for a rider such as Quintana. And even if he wants to ride Roubaix, it's impossible because of Pais Vasco. As you say, riding on small roads, fight for your positions, ... is something he can improve, even in this Flemish races.

Don't forget he did a recon of the Tour de France cobble stage Monday.

Yes, that scene was nice.
And he was giving out an impression of a satisfied guy.
Testing went well and he was really digging the vibe of Flanders.
I'm sure the circle of his supporters is growing every day.

This is why cycling was truly great through the 80's. Guys who were the great champions, with few exceptions, all rode PR. R.I.P.

When was the last time you had such scientific speculation?

Before the rode "heavy" for the classics and "thin" for the tours. Those that were too light stayed out of the spring battle and good-night.
