He doesn't need Froome to retire first - He just needs to ride smarter (stage 2 of this years Tour) and ride harder in the mountains. Of course not all tours will be as mountainous as this year, but he could do better in the mountains and then limit his loses in the tt's....imho.

This route was made for him, to the point that it was absolutely ridiculous.
That should never, and I hope it won't happen again. There was absolutely no balance there.
If he failed now, there is absolutely zero reason to think he will succeed in the future unless Chris gets seriously sick or injured.
He is a top notch climber, but Froome is just better or equal at every aspect of cycling at the moment.

This Vuelta was a very good race for Quintana considering that he was fighting for Tour victory till the very end. If not that illness he could reach the podium.

Yes, it's hard to compare. However Quintana had 1 week less to recover and first mountains were earlier in Vuelta. But we can all agree that doing two consecutive GT at highest level is almost impossible - none of Tour podium finishers was on Vuelta podium. And Vuelta winner was a cyclist who didn't take part in the Tour. That's the reason I was always sceptical about Contadors Giro-Tour double.

Yes, because Nairo loves crosswind stages, cobbles, uphill sprints with bonus seconds and short mountain stages or mountain stages with only one climb like La Pierre-Saint-Martin...damian13ster said:

Seems like Quintana is almost zero dimensional. Not only does he not like anything other than climbing, the climbs themselves must be perfectly suited as well, of a type that hardly ever features in any race in pro cycling.

Tactical sense/Positionning: Froome > Quintana
Climbing Froome >= Quintana (Somehow everyone disregards PSM and the fact that Froome got sick in the end (which Quintana apparently does in every single race he loses and that is perfect justification of his performance).
It is as simple as that. Unless Froome gets terribly sick or injured, he won't lose to Quintana

I think damian13ster forgets that Froome is already 30. Nairo is 5 years younger. Nairo will definitely beat Froome in the future. He will only get better. Froome will only get worse.

Most pleasing part of the Vuelta was Quintano's TT - He's improving in this discipline which will help him win the TDF.

You know, my problems with froome frans isn't that they like froome. Sky fans like pricey sky are great forum members and I like them. My problem is that there are froome fans like "damian13ster" who don't even try to be objective. In their opinion froome is just the best in everything and its absolutely impossible that could ever change. Yeah you are right, if froome and Quintana have the same climbing shape, froome will win because he is the better TTer and because he might gain some time on little uphill finishes. However you have to be completely stupid to think he will always be in top shape. If there is a tour in which Nairo is in the clearly better climbing shape (which is likely because he is so young), he will win it, no matter how he will do in the TT's. He isnt such a bad TTer that he wouldnt be able to get back the time in the mountains.
Next up you only talk about Froome, because who could possibly beat Nairo next year besides Froome, I mean there has to be a reason why everyone talks about the big 2 and not about the big 4 .
Ps: And I guess the point "Tactical sense/positioning" was a joke. Froome always has a sky train which positions him and you saw his great tactical sense in last years vuelta. Or would you say that pulling the leader up the road are good tactics? I don't say that Nairo's tactics are perfect but not worse than Froome's. And did you see this years cobble stage, where Nairo positioned himself without any teammates? Not what I would call bad positioning.

I am not forgetting that. The OP just said that he will win TdF within 3 years, so I asked if he thinks that Froome will retire by then. 33 is not old by cycling standards yet.

Logically, Froome should have at least 2-3 years at his current level left, but you never know. Anyway, its not at all guaranteed, that his current level is enough to beat Nairo in future GTs.

It's always hard to distinguish between trend and variation around a trend, though.

Of course, having a shitty shape is an option. Thought we are talking here about both riders at top level though? In that case Froome is just purely better as a GC rider, and it is not even close.
You might not like me, or the stye I post in, but here are the facts:
When both Froome and Quintana finish a GT
- Quintana has NEVER, NEVER placed higher than Froome
When both show up at the WT stage race:
Quintana has beaten Froome ONCE, he was 5th in Catalunya vs 6th for Froome.
Another fun fact: Other than that Catalunya, Nairo NEVER came within a minute of Froome at final GC
Thats why I can say comfortably that Froome is just much better cyclist.
You can sugarcoat it all you want, or put it in a diplomatic way, but the facts are facts.
And Froome will fade at some point, for sure. Just unlikely to happen withing next 3 years.
And I havent mentioned the other two because so far they haven't seriously competed in a TdF that had Quintana in it
