Has Froome ever properly cracked in a GT? (Obviously post-2011 transformation). It would take some serious mis-calculation for him to crack big time considering he just rides to power. Even when he's been miles from top form in the Vuelta, he doesn't crack, he just yo-yos a bit and ends up losing about 10-20 seconds, riding at his own pace.

2012 Vuelta, couldn't keep up in stage 5 in 2014 and ended up crashing; cracked big time in stage 11 of last year's Vuelta.

But no, he hasn't cracked in the last couple of tours. He won't this year, either.

I think Quintana will have to do something spectacular just to get second, to be honest.

I've never bought the hype around Quintana this year. But hey, if everyone thinks TDF is between Froome vs Quintana. Then.. okay. Turns out every time the media and cycling fans, hyping so and so rider vs so and so rider. One of those two never shows up!! And again, this time is Quintana turns. He never shows up. I suspect he didn't have the form as what they have been claiming he got. Froome wasn't that dominant this year. But the rest of the contender was just worse than him. Quintana on this TDF is... meh. He'd better rethinking his training for next year.

It sounded like he was setting up the same way that he did last year and he was plenty strong then so perhaps it's the former (or the former impacted his pre-race)

That's not very important TBH. They all made a commitment for a leader. Whether good or bad they have to stick with it. Besides top 5 for Valverde, meh.

That's not very important TBH. They all made a commitment for a leader. Whether good or bad they have to stick with it. Besides top 5 for Valverde, meh.

Yeah, they want first. Another second isn't worth as much to them as risking it for first. And Valverde was going to crack sooner or later anyway after the Giro.

If they can't do something at Mont Blanc they really have start focusing on second, though.

Anyway, as somebody who still thinks Contador isn't completely past it at 33, I don't think Quintana is really on his way down. There's clearly something wrong. It's really unfortunate though, especially with all the hype Eurosport created, and with Quintana rapidly approaching 3 years without a GT win even though he was touted as the next dominant climber.

Disgraceful. I think today's performance (along with the Tour overall) will change a lot of the strategical parameters that the Movistar team and Quintana had made for the long-term.

Not so much because he doesn't climb with the best (which is not entirely his fault), but more because of the psychological weakness displayed in the last km and by the pathetic performance of the team the day after giving interviews where they announced multiple offensive movements.

I think some people in the team car and in Spain may have realised that they don't have the future multi-Tour de France champion they always thought they had since 2013.

Edit: In that sense, what yesterday was impossible, may be possible now: Quintana and Movistar parting ways in 2018.

Giro'14 says hello. Think you might be referring to the TdF specifically though.
