With contracts the headline numbers are often misleading. The exact details of the Geno Smith deal are yet to be confirmed but of the initial 105m over 3 years it's reportedly it's "only" 40m guaranteed and 30m of it is incentives. In the inflated QB salary market that would actually be more than workable for the Seahawks. To the extent that they could very much be in play for a high risk project like Richardson in the draft

Headline numbers are really misleading with 5, 6, 7 year deals*, but I bet we find out that GS's 3 year deal is pretty straight forward. It sounds like his deal is $28 MIL in 2023, $25 in 2024, and $25 in 2025 with the rest in incentives ($40 MIL guaranteed as you said). Most of the incentives will be easy to get because 'incentive packages' are mostly about getting around cap numbers. Unless a player only cares about the 'real money' they aren't going to sign with an incentive package that includes: league MVP, Superbowl Champs, SB MVP, etc. If he plays out all 3 years, I bet that he easily gets over $100 MIL.

* a lot of the money is in the last years that will never really happen.

Do I think that GS is worth $28 MIL+ this year? EDIT: YES! (THANKS Alpe!).
-BUT, other than finding another Geno or a gem in the draft this is SEA's best move.
-This is the NFL market.
--I don't like it though.
---the NFL doesn't care if I like it or not.

Wow!...5'5" & a buck 79! - labeling him the shortest player ever measured at the combine. Good speed at 4.44 & can catch the ball - projected as a 5th rounder.

There's a 5'5.5" RB (J.J. Taylor) on the Patriot's practice squad. The last 5'5" RB to start and get significant playing time was Jacquizz Rodgers several yrs ago with the Falcons (though he was a fire plug at 205).

My "favorite" mock drafts (there are so very many now) are ones that predict a slew of trades, like on the day of the draft. It's just hilarious how absurd some are. Folly.
As a person who spends way too much of his life watching football, I have also long struggled with the money that these guys make.
I am fine with it. Otherwise it just goes to the billionaire owners. There is no possible way they are going to lower ticket prices, or stream games ad free. It's not happening. So if the money is there, I'm more than fine with the workers getting a good chunk of it. In fact, I wish the rest of Corporate America worked like this.

I'm also okay with NCAA players getting at least some money, certainly sponsorship, and revenue could at the very least go into some form of trust for each player. It's maybe more ridiculous they put their future careers, body (lives?) on the line to entertain almost as many people as the NFL, and most don't receive a penny. And don't tell me "they are getting an education!", like that number somehow translates.

If you like football, but don't want to see people making insane money, have you watched the XFL of late? I honestly think version 3.0 now is the best non-NFL pro football we've seen to date. Most of the games have been good to very good, some have been dramatically close, and the way the rules are, how efficient the games move along makes for some great football. Some games have had sloppy mistakes, and one game in Vegas was a dud, but each week sees improvement. I said before and will again, one thing the NFL must adopt is having the referees mic'd up, and the Sky Judge. XFL hiring Dean Blandino to do that gets an A+, with honors. Here's a list of some full games and extended highlights on YouTube.

Thanks, that's a good way to look at it! Even though there are some caveats in there, that's my outlook moving forward. I don't spend any money on NFL products (tickets, gear, TV, etc.). I do have several SEA hats and a flag, but those were gifts.

I'm all for NIL. So much so that I just bought some BSU trading cards that include most sports, men and woman, to support what they are doing. I will give them as a gift in our office secret Santa or something.

That's a great idea!

Giants just inked Daniel Jones four years, a whopping $160m. Details need to be ironed out, but that seems really high to me. Wow!

The problem with Dallas is now that they are paying Pollard $10m, AND Elliot $11m, plus Elliot, who doesn't have much tread left on the tires, is under contract until 2026 where he'll earn $16.6m. That's a massive amount of money for a guy with an oil drip and the check engine light on.

Rodgers given permission to talk with the Jets. If a deal happens, expect the Packers to eat money, or an overpaid player on the Jets, and not get a top draft pick in return. Also expect it to happen sooner rather than later. This is the one time I don't see Rodgers hemming and hawing until August before he finally, sort of, kind of, you know, makes up his mind.

Lamar official franchised. Let's see if anyone bites on his deal. The only team I see doing so is the Jets, if they can't get Rodgers. Lamar is one QB who could handle the pressure of playing in the New York market, as long as he didn't end up with a season ending injury. He's confident, laughed off people who said he should be a WR, doesn't have a thin skin, and is effusive at the right times. Not sure I could say half that about Rodgers.

Surprised KC didn't franchise OT Brown. But I don't second guess what that team does. I'm sure they'll be okay and have a solid plan. There are some teams who do such foolish things I wonder if I could be on their staff. KC isn't one of them. They could rightfully laugh me (any of us) out the door.

Free agency starts a day from tomorrow. The next two weeks will be extremely hectic!

For those of you who really love all things football, the USFL Draft was over a week ago. Wait, you didn't know the USFL held a draft? Well, they did! What's interesting is there was sort of an imaginary boundary where USFL teams had to draft players they thought wouldn't be drafted in the NFL, or make a team, and that player would choose to play in the USFL. This is different than the XFL, which, because it's league starts in February, takes leftover players from the NFL for the most part. USFL season starts April 15, the week before the NFL draft. The XFL's championship is May 13.

I like the way both the XFL and USFL have been very cautious with their budgeting, which is going to be necessary to survive, learning from others mistakes. I still believe the best way a second pro football league will work is if it's tied into a developmental league for the NFL in some way. But for now the XFL is filling seats in most stadiums at least enough to keep going.

And the NBA is even worse for salaries as their salaries are usually fully guaranteed at the top end...........and there is always the constant talk about reducing games even in the load management era. Unbelievable how many games some stars miss in the NBA but it has little effect on their future contracts. Its the fans that are being taken for a ride considering the ridiculous ticket prices not to mention the merchandise. and food and beverage prices especially in the NFL

With the talent on both sides of the ball and if Carr is hot NO could make a deep run. On the Brady rumors, man better stay retired otherwise he’s going to turn into the Hogan/Flair of the NFL.
He must be serious this time, he signed the papers and the TV job is waiting. even though there no official start date for that ...........

Gobsmacking contract for Jones.

Don't see Elliott lasting at the Cowboys. Lamar business could get interesting.Seems he has no agent but his mom is his advisor. Don't see many teams affording or willing to pay what Lamar wants. Maybe two. Agree that Packers want Rodgers gone but it will probably have to be on his terms or not at all. Should be an interesting free agency with many good players available.

This just broke, as hoped for and expected:

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks are completing a deal to retain the 32-year-old quarterback. Rapoport said a three-year, $105 million contract is "done and agreed."

The NFL world is thrilled for Smith, who spent most of the previous six years as a reserve before breaking out for the Seahawks in 2022.

"Yessir!!!!" Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett wrote on Twitter.
So this is the most recent take on Geno's deal:

The #Seahawks’ deal with Geno Smith has a base value of $25 million per season (three years, $75 million) with $40 million fully guaranteed at signing, sources say. Smith will earn $28 million in the first year of the deal. He has $30 million in incentives.

So now that's settled and Frank Clark is available again, along with Big Bobby Wagner in a fantasy world the Seahawks could have a D. D in ALL CAPS! Actually with the draft they may not need that much.

I still think that EE and TP are a great combo back for DAL. $25 MIL though is pretty spendy. Other teams get close to $20 MIL too with a star (McC, Henry...) plus their supporting cast in the RB room. DAL will probably keep EE just in case TP isn't ready in Aug.

The $$$ is getting absolutely insane with these top drafted QBs - it's getting hard to watch this sport anymore. The signing bonuses these hot shots get on their rookie contracts is absurd! Free money in their pocket regardless of how they pan out. Big money for not even having taken one snap in a game. How they must laugh all the way to the bank.

FFS, Lawrence got a 24.1 mil signing bonus for being touted as the next "Peyton Manning" Lol. Last time I checked the Jags won a playoff game last season & that was about it after a less than stellar 9-8 season. Lance gets a 22.1 mil signing bonus & has he done anything but get hurt? Lol. Jordan Love gets a 12 mil contract with a 6.6 mil signing bonus - for just standing on the sidelines holding a clipboard the last 3 yrs. Lol. And the bust of the CENTURY - Chosen Rosen - got a nice 11 mil signing bonus for being the guy that would supposedly lead the Cardinals to the promised land. And where is he now - on the practice squad of the Vikings. Lol (I hope he buys lunch for all the struggling players there being paid peanuts as they try to live out their dream).

And what about this current group of hot shot 1st rounders? Is Bryce Young going to be given an insane 28 or 30 mil signing bonus as the #1 OA? For someone who wouldn't even throw at the combine! Lol. I guess the Billionaire owners love throwing away big bucks at these QBs who haven't proven themselves on the field. While the rest of us have to actually work for living & earn our pay, these guys get absurd $$$ for just "signing a contract" & living the life of the rich & famous.

And the PED issue is getting ridiculous in this league. Hopkins gets a laughable 6 game suspension for his OOC doping positive when it should have been at least a year. And on his first game back from the suspension on the player intros, he was cheered & welcomed back with open arms. Lol. If he was a cyclist, a thread would have been created here & he would have been roasted for being a doper. Lol. Roid rage, freakish physiques, mass monsters, etc - IMO, all smells of rampant PED use. Lord knows what they're getting away with & a lousy 6 game suspension is far from any kind of deterrent (what is it with the UCI - something like 4 yrs for a first time doping infraction?).

With outrageous salaries, bad behavior accepted in the league, coaches fired & hired like crazy, and recycled like old furniture --- the NFL is becoming a circus.

The Saints signing Carr means Jamis Winston will be cut within days. Carr's contract has about $70m guaranteed, and a no-trade clause, which means he believes he is there to stay.
So, the Saints replace the starter last season, Dalton, who never has won a playoff game is only getting paid 1 mil, with a high-priced crybaby who also has never won a playoff.

Brilliancy at its best. Lol.

We already pretty much know what Bryce Young (or whoever was picked at #1) will earn for the first 4 years of their contract. It's fixed. There is no negotiation on rookie salaries
If someone chose a kicker with the 1st pick they would earn exactly the same as a QB would
They are very cheap. You get 4 years of Trevor Lawrence for one year of Jared Goff. Or about 10 games of Dak Prescott
Despite inflation, all the highest paid rookies in history were from more than 10 years ago (before the rookie wage scale came in)
In those years the #1 overall pick would immediately become one of the best paid players in the NFL. Now they wouldn't crack the top 100

I think that all of the first rounders will get about $700,000 this year. They have backloaded contracts that give them HUGE money if they play out their four year rookie contract.

I think that Trevor Lawrence (JAX) is getting:
$650,000,
$850,000,
$950,000,
$1,050,00
plus a roster bonus of about $3 MIL/year

If he plays out his rookie contract he will get about $35 MIL ($20 MIL 'signing bonus' payable after four years being a big chunk of that).

DISCLAIMER: That is from my memory of watching a doc on him, and I'm sure I rounded the numbers some.

You are correct that the kicker would get the same 'base', but I bet that they wouldn't get the same HUGE 'signing bonus' at the end.

Could be Jets or retirement for Rodgers according to some of the talking heads. Hardly any teams are in a position to give him what he wants or they see better options.

I guess you are referring to the 5th year option year which all 1st round picks have. That does vary depending on position (and a few other factors) but still not negotiable - the team can either say yes or no thanks and they need to decide before year 4 (Here's this years). It will be interesting to see whether the Dolphins pick up the 23m option for Tua and whether the Packers pick up the 20m option for Jordan Love. The Giants declined on Daniel Jones last year which has proved quite expensive but easy to say in hindsight. The first 4 years of all draft picks contracts are fixed depending only on draft pick number. For most first round picks (it might be the first 20 or so) those 4 years are completely guaranteed and after that the guaranteed % decreases.

I was a little off on the numbers, but pretty close for my old brain:

"Trevor Lawrence signed a 4 year, $36,793,488 contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including a $24,118,900 signing bonus, $36,793,488 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $9,198,372. In 2023, Lawrence will earn a base salary of $940,000 and a roster bonus of $3,064,863, while carrying a cap hit of $10,034,588 and a dead cap value of $14,054,450."

Yes. Those contracts are nothing, and the way the NFL is set up now is vastly superior than in the past, when rookies would hold out, or get massive money. Now they are still paid well. Some in the NFLPA complained, but not many, as it's still good money.

Without adjusting for inflation, compare what Lawerence gets to the contract Sam Bradford signed, which still hasn't been equaled by any rookie since. 6-year, $78m (max value at $86m) $50 million was fully guaranteed. That was 14 years ago. Jamarcus Russell was another huge reason that the rookie contract got capped the way it has. He held out, demanding a massive contract. And when he got a 6 year, $60m, with $32m guaranteed, he sucked. No work ethic at all. He just wanted the money. Lawerence deal is 4 years, $36m total, just over $7m a year.

Compare this to Deshaun Watson, Aaron Rodgers, or the deal Lamar wants.

If you think Carr is a "cry baby" and thus will be a bad quarterback, I can only wonder what you think about so very many other players in the NFL that cause trouble, headaches, PED issues, contract demands, spend time in darkness rooms and drinks ayahuasca tea, etc. Then there's all the anti-vaxxers. Carr is one of the very best human beings in the league and I would think any team would be happy to have him be part of their locker room. Yes, he got emotional a few times when losing, I don't mind that at all, in fact, I'll take that any day over someone like Kyler Murray who would rather play video games that study playbooks and film. And if you are saying Andy Dalton is a better QB, I guess we'll see how that plays out in 2023. One stat no one seems to mention about Carr when saying he never won a playoff game or other flaws is that in his 9 seasons on the Raiders the best defense they ever had was ranked 20th, a year they went 12-4, and he broke his leg in the last game of the season and couldn't play in the playoffs. Carr also had a carousel of coaches and OCs his entire career on a dysfunctional team with little stability. This will be Saints OC Pete Carmichael's 14th season with the Saints, just as a comparison.

After the Jets flew out to California, I'd say it's almost a done deal for Rodgers. It wasn't just Robert Saleh and Nathaniel Hackett who flew out there. Both Woody and Christopher Johnson, plus GM Joe Douglas were there. Woody is the guy with the checkbook, the guy who can make any and all decisions on a snap, with no one else needing to say "okay". I can't possibly imagine this just happened as some sort of meet and greet to test the waters. They where there to get everything done to get him, just short of having him sign a deal and receive a fat check on the spot.

A quick reporter noted the plane wasn't the Johnson's private plane, but a chartered private jet. It also landed at Camarillo, and LAX, and back in White Plains, before going back to JFK. This lended some speculation that the Jets picked up Packers GM Brian Gutekunst or Mark Murphy somewhere along the way. Or possibly Rodgers agent David Dunn.

This meeting also just about burns the last vestiges of the bridge back to Green Bay for Rodgers. Maybe not. Stranger things have happened. Certainly with Rodgers! But I'd say the odds look like this about now for Rodgers 2023:

Jets: 75%
Retirement: 20%
Packers: 5%

Wow!...5'5" & a buck 79! - labeling him the shortest player ever measured at the combine. Good speed at 4.44 & can catch the ball - projected as a 5th rounder.

There's a 5'5.5" RB (J.J. Taylor) on the Patriot's practice squad. The last 5'5" RB to start and get significant playing time was Jacquizz Rodgers several yrs ago with the Falcons (though he was a fire plug at 205).
He was also exceedingly quick. Defenses couldn't even see him and he had a great rapport with OF linemen. I can't find video but there were situations where he just kept a hand on his lead blockers hip until they walked him into the defensive backfield for a quick additional 10 yds. Downside is you couldn't pass to a reciever you couldn't see and he wasn't big enough to block effectively. He was either the ball carrier or a decoy like most guys that size and could be defended accordingly....if you knew where he was. His pro career seemed to reflect that reality and he didn't get a ton of carries until the end of his career. Fun to watch in college with his brother.

Did Woody have to get into a duo sensory deprivation tank with Aaron to come to an understanding?
