Lamar's biggest issue is he seems completely hung up on, obsessed with, that ridiculous contract Watson got. Even Hurts didn't get a contract like that. The problem for Lamar is, Watson didn't deserve that contract, everyone on the planet, except the Browns (specifically owner Jimmy Haslem), and Lamar, knows that contract was absurd and Watson didn't deserve anything close to it. As only the Browns and Haslem would hand out that contract. End of story. Sorry Lamar.
I don't know of many high profile players without agents and I don't know what the reasoning is behind it. Lamar's mom is his advisor and that's fine although we have also seen those situations go pear shaped pretty often too with family members controlling salaries and accounts also in the entertainment world. Yes the agent's money would be saved of course but the NFL is probably a good place to have an experienced agent

Having family you love and trust helping you is great, but he and his mom don’t have the relationships built with every team like the agents do or know the ins and outs. I think with an agent he could have gotten a deal closer to what he wanted or accepted one of the Ravens offers due to hearing sound reasoning and judgement from a third party.

While I like the idea of being able to function without an agent, an agent removes/greatly reduces emotion from the negotiation equation.

I think the classic case is Russell Okung. I don't think he ever had an agent. His first deal he got with Denver was heavily criticized for putting himself at a lot of risk. But he stayed healthy, and got paid. His next deal he was able to negotiate with a lot more guarantees and was praised for it. His most recent deal he had half of it put into Bitcoin! Now, I don't know when if or when he divested/sold (or not) any of that Bitcoin, but I remember the market went up about 80% after his deal. Bitcoin has now tanked to what must be a lot lower. So, who knows?

Richard Sherman said something to the effect that a veteran player doesn't need an agent. Sherman is a pretty smart guy, so I would venture to say he was speaking for himself! But Tom Brady kept agent Don Yee until I think this day. But Brady also had a lot of say in how his contracts were done. Recall that more than once he made agreements with Kraft/Belicheck that he would take a pay cut, or restructure, as long as the team spent up to the limit of the cap, and took his input seriously. I think his last 2 years in New England that's what fell apart. But Tom made nearly a half billion dollars in his career, so he still came out fine!

Lamar actually had in a tweet somewhere the words "and I need an agent". This left Miles Symmons baffled to not understand if Lamar meant that in a literal way (as in, he should have gotten an agent a couple years ago) or he was being sarcastic, meaning he was doing fine and definitely did not need an agent like others implied.

I'll still stand by my last post though. I just think he's hung on on Watson's contract, and that's that.

Draft is 6 days away.

The draft will be extra interesting this year with so many QB rumors floating around . Lamar Jackson, Rodgers and now all of the Trey Lance possibly being traded rumors as well. Some people seem to think that something big will happen on draft night as it appears that some of the teams near the top of the draft are not completely sold on the QB depth in this year's draft.

I also think that its easier for positions other than QB1 to negotiate. Maybe I could also toss in a star from other positions like RB, WR, DE, etc., but even those have a 'window' that they negotiate within. QB1s have shattered all of the windows. DW/CLE blew entire glass buildings to smithereens.

....and now Tyler Huntley is back on the Ravens' squad. Not sure if that's another hedge or a wedge for Lamar. IMO he should take the deal they offered and spend a little on therapy and introspection. He's good and needs to focus on getting the team deeper into playoffs to justify any deal to the team and his mates at this point.

According to one rumor from ESPN the Texans seek to trade the #2 pick to the Ravens for Lamar. I've now also heard Arizona is shopping their #3 pick heavily, even for multi-team deals. Let's see what actually happens. Maybe nothing. Along with some of these mock drafts that have all sorts of wild trades, so many people are just writing out their a** at this point.

Peter King pointed out this year's draft is so up in the air, because there are quite a few teams with new GMs, some with new GMs and coaches, and some have never drafted before. This makes speculation and mocks more folly than ever before.

Tip of an iceberg I would guess. "Suspension" is an interesting term in the NFL. See: PEDS. Not much downside or willingness to end abuse IMO.
As a child watching games with my grandfather and dad..could have never ever imagined that gambling on the NFL would have been a thing on scale.
When I look at the thousands of sites like Draft Kings and see players suspended.. were they home schooled? In 2023 if you can't figure out how to place an anonymous bet..I mean really!!
You see guys like Denny McLain or Pete Rose who had their lives and professional legacy trashed from betting. There just is no excuse to get caught.. I understand that there are all kinds of disorders associated with gambling.. but I don't see how pro sports don't have a one strike your out policy. I don't know.. but I am wondering if the government or NFL..like the SEC is monitoring for insider trading for football wins or losses. If you are a kicker or running back, receiver near the end of your career you could really feather your nest with a full game of intentional screw ups..

We've discussed this:

EDIT: One important factor that may not be considered is the condition of the playing surface (and/or which version of turf is being used).

Well sure...if you let Rhianna's producer on the field it is not good. If you manage natural grass like it can be grown; you'd definitely reduce the risk. The guaranteed contracts we've seen would be the best incentive to do that. Moreover, we've known that for 20+ years.

That's just a glaring example of 1. My point was that they can't just say grass vs turf because there are more variables than that.

I think that is probably a better deal for the Packers. Looks like the Jets are all-in for 2023 and 2024, then...they are the Rams of 2022-2023 for the foreseeable future after that. The Packers however look like, presuming Love plays at least as well as he did in that game he played this year (his best yet), they could go back to contending as soon as 2024. They will be loaded with young talent, provided they draft well, plan well.

I posted before about the turf issue. My initial thought was grass has to be better, and the players want it. But when I looked into turf I indeed realized there are several different kinds, with only one type the players dislike, I think it was the split turf style. But it is a complex issue, not black and white. We obviously saw that in the Super Bowl. I love mud games, but mud games need to happen in the rain, storms, when nothing more can be done. Then it's okay. What happened in the SB was just an embarrassment.

Some stadiums also have replaced the fake stuff frequently, and kept it up better than others. I seem to recall the story how New England had turf years ago, then in about 2000 switched back to grass. Then when grass wasn't doing well in Foxboro, around 2010 switched back to turf, and Robert Kraft got direct input from Tom Brady and other players, as to which turf to put in there.

Another factor rarely mentioned is how most practice facilities are on turf, not all, but most. Recall how Teddy Bridgewater all but destroyed his knee scrambling on a turf practice field in a non-contact drill. But I don't know if that turf was the same as what they were playing on (were they in US Bank then? Or at the Gopher stadium? Both are turf).

Jets can probably name their price to appear on this year's Hard Knocks. They are going to be the most intriguing team for quite some time. Potentially they get one of the best QBs in the league without having to give up the farm. Potentially it could also implode spectacularly but even if that does happen it should only set them back for a couple of seasons. Worth the gamble I think

After having no luck finding a good QB in the draft in recent times I can understand them trying a different method to find better QB play and it will also be Rodgers last chance at making it to another SB if things go well although now he has to contend with the AFC. The NFC looks pretty barren at the moment as far as potential SB winners go.

A-aron's quest to not mess up will be complicated by media attention. He won't be able to blame anyone else, either.

I just don't think that ERodge has it in him anymore (especially mentally). Could the move light a fire under him? Maybe...
