At the end of the season last year, ownership said they are one QB away from contenting for a SB. That simply meant they had given up on Wilson. So, they acquire Rodgers who they believe to be that "one QB" to not only win immediately but make & go deep in the playoffs.
And now the #2 overall pick from the 2021 draft sits the bench as what appears to be another high-drafted QB bust.
IMO, if a QB is a top-10 OA pick & can't lead the team to at least the playoffs within 3 yrs of starting - then he's a failure & the team egregiously overvalued his draft status.

Maybe he and Lance should start a business together...........maybe Wentz and Mayfield should do the same..........it seems he and Lance were totally overrated by the scouts and so called draft experts while Purdy flew completely under the radar if his first 8 starts are anything to go by. You could argue that that QB draft class was way over valued. Some people expect Fields to take a jump this year..........remains to be seen. Even crazier how polarizing the commentators two sides are of those supporting and ridiculing him. It will leave a sour taste for everyone when the movie was supposed to be a feel good story.
Good points. And how can Shanahan put all the marbles in the basket on Lance & take Purdy with the last pick with the intentions of having him on the practice squad for development of being a long-term backup in this league. Lol. Like Alpe said - isn't Shanahan supposed to know a lot about QB talent?
Fields has to make the jump. This is his 3rd yr of starting, and being a #11 OA pick he's definitely in the pressure cooker to turn the Bears around & make the playoffs now.
But there are success stories: Allen, Burrow, Hubert, Lawrence, Tua, Mahomes - all top 10 OA picks making the playoffs & then some within 2 yrs of starting (with Mahomes being the Grand Slam of franchise QBs - kudos to Reid for spotting & moving up in the draft to get him!). And let's not forget Hurts - only a mid-2nd rd pick who has already overachieved with a lot of upside still left.

Yes all of those players have done well. Tua had some misfortune with the concussions. Lawrence just needed a better coach which he got Seems the jury is out on Murray and the Cardinals are firmly in rebuild mode now. His contract will make him difficult to move which some expect is inevitable.

Let's not forget the total disaster that was Jacksonville before Doug Pederson got there. Lawerence gets a pass on that. In fact, if you watch the Jags in the preseason game, they look extremely well organized and prepared as a unit overall. Ready to roll.
Agree Zach Wilson is done in NY. As I said, the last times they played him last year, he looked completely lost. Now, sitting behind Rodgers may help him, his psyche, same with playing in these preseason games against 3rd stringers. It could help his stock perhaps, but it won't make him a better player. He's in no man's land. He's on the verge of being the next Carson Wetnz, if he isn't already. I honestly can see him in an XFL or USFL uniform in 2025, along with Lance.
I would put Jamarcus Russell on the top of that biggest bust of all time list, not Leaf. Good article though. Shocking amount of players drafted in recent years. Yep, most QBs.
I think this is going to be the year to see if Hubert really has it to be a top QB. The Chargers completely collapsed in that playoff game last year - their entire team did. It wasn't just him. However, the peculiar part is that the Chargers just paid him a zillion dollar contract, so he better perform!
I agree this is the jury year for Fields. But he finally has pieces around him. He did look good last year...at times.
I'm curious how Hurts does this season. The Eagles were a complete team last year, with a great OL. They lost key players, and both coordinators. But it was their supposed superior DL that got spanked by the Chiefs OL in the SB, wasn't Hurts fault. He should have another pretty good year. But even if he doesn't, considering they got him in the 2nd round, he's already somewhat of a steal.
Considering that the Cardinals are very likely to finish in the bottom 5 of the league, maybe win the Caleb Williams sweepstakes, it makes me wonder what the heck they are going to do next year. Draft Williams (or Maye), or...? But dealing Murray will be all but impossible. His contract is almost as bad as Russell Wilson. They could find a team that has cap room, cash, and do a trade where the team eats Murray and his contract, and gets a couple picks in exchange. Of course, they drafted Josh Rosen high, he busted. They sucked, fired the coach. Drafted Murray, traded Rosen. So why not rinse/repeat?
That video doesn't go into enough of the back and forth each side has been saying about Oher. As I wrote in the last post, read more sources and you'll see it's a mess, and I think there are more things going on than we realize. I watched this in a state of heartbreak. Potential just pissed away for a variety of reasons. And seeing the observation that he wasn't doing his homework.. Yikes Browns monitored his IPad and saw that he watched zero minutes of the game films that they told him to study.. and hearing him was gut wrenching.. " I went to Las Vegas to party and gamble on Saturday and didn't have a return flight booked so I could be at Sundays game back in Cleveland " and he no shows his NFL job and gets fired from the Browns..buys a gun weeks in advance of a planned self destructive party month or 2 with plans to commit suicide.. Gun malfunction.. or.....
Special & they're rewarded accordingly. A good example is Lamar Jackson. He was the last pick (32) of the 1st rd of the 2018 draft. In 5 seasons with the Ravens he's taken them to the playoffs 4 times but has only 1 playoff win (1-3).
Ownership rewards Jackson by making him the 2nd highest paid QB in the league. Granted he was the league's MVP - but think about this: The Ravens have the 2nd highest paid QB who is 1-3 in the playoffs without even a AFC championship game appearance. Though the Ravens won a SB with Joe Flacco (MVP) in that sensational 2012 season, are expectations lower with Jackson?
At the other end of the spectrum is Baker Mayfield - a #1 OA pick. It wasn't until his 3rd yr that he took the Browns to playoffs - actually winning one (WC round) - then losing in the divisional round (1-1).
The following season goes real bad for Mayfield - between injuries causing missed starts, playing through injuries & poor performance - he plays in only 14 games going 6-8. That was enough for ownership & Mayfield was traded in the off-season. No patience or tolerance exhibited - one bad year of regression & you're history - especially after making the playoffs the year before (obviously these are expectations that come with being a #1 OA). Now he's with his 4th team in 3 yrs competing against Kyle Trask for the starting job at Tampa Bay. Lol

Alrighty then - with the preeminent Doug Pederson at the helm, #1 OA Trevor Lawrence (" the next Peyton Manning") orchestrating the offense & some decent offensive talent - we should expect a SB appearance within the next two seasons.

I think that's fairly reasonable, depending how he does this year, and what kind of mega deal they give him if he does well. Presuming that's the case, if I were Shahid Kahn (and Trent Baalke?!) I'd expect to see my team in the Super Bowl by 2027 (2026 season) at the very latest. Or at least a lot of winning, big playoff wins, and when they lose it isn't his fault. Even if he's just "good", he's the next Jamis Winston, Kyler Murray, Sam Bradford, etc. And no way that's acceptable to Kahn, or the Jags fans.
There are some peculiar comparisons that can be made though, depending on if it's the lens of draft pick, or money. Here are the top paid QBs in the league.

I think it was both. I think he's overhyped, plus this was an average year for QBs in the draft, and way too much hype, period*. I also think he is too small. I see him eating a lot of sacks, and not getting the ball out enough. Now, that doesn't mean he's going to completely bust. But if he has a lousy year, it may likely be that the Panthers have issues all over. Keep in mind they gave up their 1st round draft picks for 2024, and 2025, plus two second round picks, plus DJ Moore, in order to get him. So little help will be coming from that direction. They mortgaged their future to get him, expecting him to lead the team to the promised land.
*I think we are already seeing this. Young, Stroud, Richardson, Levis, all looked like they need a lot of work, a lot of snaps before we find out if they are really going to be very good in the NFL. The fact that O'Connell, Bennett, Thompson-Robinson and Sean Clifford have all looked good - like they are in just a couple games showing they have enough command of the offense and are used to the speed of the NFL to be back-up QBs, who maybe could win games if they start, is telling, even if this is a way too early analysis. But you look at every stat so far from every pre-season game, and players like Clayton Tune, or Trevor Simeon are putting up better numbers than "the top 4".
Again, this is far too early to put a lot of stock on, but it's potentially telling.
