Opinion: Why I would vote for Brian Cookson
By: Jonathan Vaughters

What a surprise..mehhhh..not really.

That voicemail is great! Also like hearing some perspective about what UCI 'meetings' are actually like.

My eyes kind of glazed over by the time I got to the Cookson part, but whatevs, the issue has always been more about Pat (excuse me, Hein) than anything.

My thoughts exactly. I have no settled opinion on Cookson, but the detail about how the UCI is actually run is fascinating and well worth reading.

As those that read my blogs will tell you , JV has only reminded us of what the CLINIC had already reported at the time those events took place !

Not everybody reads the " Clinic " , so JV has had to spell it out to the 40 "voting (42-2) delegates "that they JEAPARDISE their lifestyle , by ignoring the TRUTH ! Educated people having to have TRUTH spelt out to them , t-r-u-t-h ,
hard to understand why they are resisting acting in the BEST INTERESTS of Cycling Sport ?

Now that JV has led the way , expect the Russians and The US teams to follow suit !

THEY SAY , there is SAFETY in NUMBERS !

Lets see which Team owners deserve derision for being " GUTLESS "?

Why would anyone who reads your blog need to be reminded here about anything? Unless they are not reading?

Still can't believe it's between Pat and Brian. In the end does it really matter who wins? Didn't think so.

It would appear Lance is a Cookson supporter

"Lance is focused on moving forward," says Plant, who is in consistent contact with Armstrong. "I think there will be reconciliation at some time." Cookson has already professed a desire to offer amnesty for confessed dopers. He is goodwill hunting, entering the job mostly naïve to the dirt inside the McQuaid-Verbruggen Era. McQuaid, on the other hand, knows too much. He can spot a lie -- especially any Lance would spout during a tell-all session -- which is why Lance is likely wearing a Vote Cookson button on his hipster T-shirts.

Wonder why JV is backing Cookson so vocally!

Lance is a Lance supporter.

Also, Cookson said clearly it is for WADA to decide:
He said: “I’m not very comfortable with offering Lance Armstrong much hope for the future but I guess that wouldn’t be in my hands anyway – that would be in the hands of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
“Let me try to choose my words carefully: I think others have been treated more generously than he’s been treated and I would like a more level playing field.
“That doesn’t necessarily mean I want to see him back. I certainly don’t think there’s any room for him in elite cycling any longer but we’ll see what he has to say and I think if he’s got more truth to come out, as clearly he has, then I think he should tell that. But he would be looking for some incentive to do that.”

Telegraph Sport has learnt that British Cycling president Cookson succeeded in preventing UCI lawyer Philippe Verbiest and manager of national federations Dominique Raymond being part of the team tasked with verifying the number of votes cast for the two candidates.

Cookson is understood to have been stunned to learn that colleagues of UCI president McQuaid could be so directly involved in administering the election. Cookson’s argument that it represented a potential conflict of interests held sway, with the votes to be counted instead by two national federation presidents before being independently scrutinised.

Ballot rigging? Nah, not our UCI.

Dave.

Wiggo thinks we have a new president:
Cookson has said he was confident of getting a vote in the “high twenties” which, from 42 delegates, would represent an overwhelming victory. He refused to talk numbers on Wednesday but Sir Bradley Wiggins left no doubt what he thought about the election, saying: “From what I understand, it’s a done deal. Cookson’s already in.”
Hope his information is good.

Does leave the impression of an 'arrangement' and business as usual, though.

Dave.

No, it just shows asking a Pro rider to respond to something that they have little idea about is both pointless and dumb.

While the indications are that Cookson has the numbers, dismiss McQuaid et al at your peril.

But when you ask a pro rider - especially that pro rider - to respond to something that they are expert in, like doping, you get an even dumber response.

Thus, I consider that response to be an 'educated opinion'.

Why is Wiggins an expert in doping? I don't think any rider is.

King Boonen said:
Nope. This is taking it as a given he doped. Why is he an expert? And if he is why have Kerrison, Leinders etc. around?

Riders who dope are no more experts in doping than pilots are in plane design. That's why people like Fuentes get involved.

First, I never said that he was an expert doping program creator or designer.

Let's just assume he is in Tyler's 20%.

That means that minimally he has had a front-row seat on the other 80%.

But, as an accomplished student of the sport, he should be considered an expert in the sport. And, his front-row seat on the other 80% brings a certain qualified expertise.

Taking the leap that he has the requisite intelligence to pass the Ullrich 1+1 test, then we should be able to conclude his cycling expertise would include expertise on doping in cycling.

Edit to add: Of course, we could just go with the odds and assume that he is in the 80%. That means he has been an expert doping user. Still makes him an expert.

Dave.

It's also a phrase used commonly used in Shoreditch to stress confidence in an uncertain future outcome.

If Mr. Michael Brian Cookson OBE is elected UCI President
there is a very good chance the Absolute Hour Record will
be resurrected and co-exist with the Athletes Hour Record.
A number of bike, component and wheel companies that give
great support to professional cycling have been pushing for
the return of the Absolute Hour Record for a number of years.
Mr. Cookson delivers on his promise. Thank you, sir.
