No giro for Scarponi

Page 6 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
from an interview with Grega Bole on a slovenian website

Now your teammate Michele Scarponi has become the winner of the last Giro d'Italia...

Nonetheless, everybody will still say, that he was beaten by Contador. Even because he wasn't found guilty for having doped in that race. This year Scarponi wants to get a "real" win and wear the maglia rosa in Milan.

do you try to reassure yourself?

He's making a valid observation about a cyclist. What problems do you have with his post other than the fact he's a supporter of Cadel Evans?

Of course ACF is insecure about a second Tour victory for Evans, but I don't think he sees Scarponi as a big threat in this particular Tour ;) And he shouldn't.

Unlike some other posters, I can't have problems with that.

Because I'm a big supporter of Basso's theory regarding the fact that the Tour climbs are passed twice as fast as the Giro ones. It would be interesting to observe if anythign has changed since 05-06. Though, if Scarponi starts, I'm afraid, he will concentrate on stages at once.

lol i don't think basso said that.the speeds on the big climbs of il giro barring 2010 match pretty much the speeds of le tour.but of course on the flat le tour is much more nervous and faster so a first week of le tour will cut you energy before even arriving at the foot of the mountains.lately though it happens in both giro and vuelta(also bonus points for the extreme heat)
still for me the biggest performance of 2011 stays the average speed of the peloton in the hellish il giro, hardest grand tour in recent history.i'd have expected not more than 37 km/h and it was almost 39 km/h.after the terrible triple,we had days with first hour average speeds at 50 km/h.pretty cool.
dauphine was i think one of the fastest on the climbs in its history also.see purito's stratospheric's ascent.
of course if you really want to believe it,yes it's all changed:p

he said something like that before the 2005 tour, iirc. yeah, clearly he didn't mean literally, and yet many circumstances put an additional pressure on them there. A rider has to constantly ride the tour to succeed on the tour climbs. no other way. in 2006 Cunego was far better climber than now, however he dropped on peyresourde from 50 people pack on a completely transit mountain stage. something similar happened to samu on tourmalet. thats why sort of karma of the tour climbs undoubtedly exists. ;) :)
hm, do we have any objective possibility to compare the average speed exactly in the mountains?)

before 2005,i think basso was not very far away from the truth.vuelta for example was regarded as a training ride for WC,now every team puts the hammer down in every stage there.i'd say now in 2012,both giro and vuelta slowly catch up with the level of le tour from what i've heard from the riders of course.i can't know myself.
for example, the level of 2004 giro was so low in terms of performances over the mountains that even now,the 2012 cunego would still have won it.
2006 was different,to succeed in both giro and le tour same year(i remember cunego also did robobasso giro's that year,he even finished 4th) you have to carry a special, big engine(menchov, contador,it happens rarely).
le tour no doubt remains the grand tour where the mountains are climbed at the highest speed though.for now.

I don't think it's even necessarily the speed on the climbs right now. The first week in the Tour is just all out war, in the Giro and certainly the Vuelta it's nothing of the sort.

It was Contador who said that during the Giro last year by the way, not Ivan Basso. Although he could have said something similar.

I don´t get your arguments (impressions?) How can I take your other posts then?

Kreuziger is too heavy for such slopes.
??
Basso: 183 cm / 70 kg
Kreuziger: 183cm / 66kg

I prefer Giro to Tour, I simply like the Italian mentality better and I feel more at home in Italy. The ambience of Giro is different and I´ve come to like it.

hm, yeah, maybe. though these numbers call into question. kreuziger seems to me bulkier than basso no doubt. basso cannot be 70kg in his combative version. in the end, not everything can be defined with pure numbers. probably, basso has more "lightweight bone", which helps him to climb more effectively.

The only thing which makes him do the Giro is willingness to be a captain, otherwise he would always have preferred the Tour.
looks a bit weird from the guy, who rode 3 tours and always preferred tt to mountains. at least, his last years giro participation seemed to me a necessary measure. ok i was wrong.

TdF is a legend, but Giro - once you try and you get never enough...

Well, I´m sure it will not be just about the few riders mentioned here ;)
Can´t wait!
