Basso was paying Fuentes €70,000 a year.

More importantly - the data from the stages appear to show much slower times up climbs then previous editions and all of the GC contenders have had days where they were slightly off.

I think its quite evident that this Tour is 'cleaner' - bit not because of the US investigation (as the poster you are quoting suggests) but because the French authorities (AFLD, OCESLP, Police etc) are far quite proactive.

C'mon Doc, the French aren't clean. They're the worst dopers in the peloton. Just go look in the Rolland and Voeckler threads...

Come to think of it, maybe this is the end result of a long-term, 25 year (since Hinault's last \TdF victory) concerted plot by the French to bust EVERYONE ELSE, leaving the door open to a renaissance of French cycling with systematic and systemic team and individual doping...

Damned French...

Answer to an unanswered old post concerning the founder of CyclingNews.

PS: Relevant because it was Bill Mitchell's picking up of European statements on LA's performances in the 1999 TdF that raised LA supporter ire being ultimately aimed at driving CyclingNews out of business and resulting in Bill Mitchell selling the business.

just saw this! Thank you Velodude.
quite interesting and he looks to be having a happy and productive life.
and LA...
karma indeed! :)

Times and power estimates looked considerably human at this year's Tour. Favorites had bad days. Riders looked wasted after stages. Journeyman riders were competitive with the favorites on any given day, even if not sustainable. The Tour looked cleaner.

I believe this investigation is the primary reason for a cleaner race. Without significant consequences, PEDs become an arms race that no one can afford to lose. Puerto didn't do it. Festina didn't do it. Only this "waste of taxpayer money" seems to be working because it is going over the head of the UCI and endangering the livelihood of the cyclists who dope, rather than those who do not.

As an American Tax Payer, I can only hope the French Citizenry appreciate our success in cleaning up their race.

Hope Monsieur Bordry appreciates it.

Although the Statue of Liberty WAS a cool gift from them.
And they DID save us from the Brits way back when.

Ok, I guess we can call it even.

Vive le Tour!

And here I was picturing you as being from Warsaw or Gdansk! :)

Did he not show his face at the TdF in the end?

Doesn't seem like it. It would have gotten plenty of press, given the controversies he's involved in.

By the way, weren't the indictments supposed to be handed out by now? The last rumor I heard was it would be during Tour time.

Dunno, always seems to be in a few weeks' time.

I know that Lance filed a motion against the FEDs during the Tour.
Maybe that's what you were thinking of?

After all the build up and hype about Lance heading over to the Tour in the third week and attending RS party , seeing Johan, etc...it's sure been a silent ending.

a silent ending indeed. He wasn't really missed. :(
briefly, he appeared in this interview expressing his thoughts on whom he thought would win the tour, but that interview didn't exactly spin around the world.
Guess nobody was really interested in his opinion. How would he have answered the one question that was central and on everybody's lips:
"Lance, do you feel the tour is cleaner this year than in previous years?"
Lance must feel estranged in Europe these days.
I wonder what he calls home nowadays.

He IS smart enough to stay out of the spotlight once in a while...this probably being an edict from his legal team.
I know I didn't miss him. ;)

Aspen must be where he feels he belongs...
..just guessing .:)

The Radioshack/Nissan "Après Tour Party" in Paris was THE mega-exclusive Soiree.

Invite only.
Most sought after invite.
Private, no cameras allowed.
No interviews.
Party hardy.
Sarkozy Clinton Bono Eddy etc.

Alberto asked for an invite of course.

Lance said "sure".
Sent him an invite pronto.
Listed the location at a Discothèque across town ooops.

I heard a weird story that someone nabbed the tires from Alberto's taxi as he set out to go to this exclusive soiree. Heard anything about that?

Myself, I surmise this tire dustup thing is another HogBoy type interweb rumour, as I heard that the main course at the soiree involved cow parts, which Bertie seems to avoid lately.

He should go on the Flandis diet - waffles, waffles, and more waffles.

You know that Lance is a very private and shy person who does not really enjoy being in the center of attention. When he appeared at the tdf it was not for the PR but only to give Levi moral support in the last stages. :D

I've been in Nova Scotia for a week with blessedly limited Internet access. Apologies if this has been asked or discussed. Did Armstrong show up in France during the Tour?

Chic!
Upper class VIPs abound.
No cameras, no interviews?
This would be a prudent precaution, given the cache cache fiasco.
