I am wondering, both Armstrong and Bruyneel admit that attacking wasn't the plan.
Contador attacked, and now, after the fact, we know it wasn't the plan
Why would first the other captain of the team as well as the DS admit that Contador's attack wasn't planned out, while the attack clearly improved AST position re other contenders. Contador put 20s on other contenders who didn't make up any time, while they were behind. On first sight, that looks like a victory to the team (assuming Contador didn't waste too much energy in the last 2k, so that it'll affect his performance over 3 weeks).
Bruyneel and Armstrong know a bit about PR and dealing with the press.
'Not planned, excellent outcome'. However, we did not know that the former.
Given the continuous reports about infighting, why wouldn't they want to defuse it and state that it had been the plan. In other words, why would they have stated that Contador did not act in accordance with supposed team tactics, while they could have used it to their advantage and spin the perception that everything was swell within the team...
Why not protect Contador, who is on your team as one of the team captains?
