Does anyone official keep track of how many times a rider goes down? Serious question

I don't but these top riders is easy to know because we follow them all season. I know he crashed in the Tour at least one time, he crashed 2 times yesterday and one in the beginning of the Vuelta and in Dwars. So he crashed (at least) 5 times this season. Maybe he fell more but I don't know.

He has had very hard falls this year. Needs to take some time off and appreciate the possibility of next year.

Horrendous outcome. Considering still in fight for two jerseys and one or two stage wins and to end like this. On top of that WC in danger.

We see this too many times in this sport.

It's bad and I feel very sorry for him, but on a positive side of things, he still took 3 WT level GT stage wins home. It's a result very few people do in this sport. Must have glass half full for him.

Robbie McEwen said in Max live, that it was positive sign that he was able to try to carry on and clip and unclip, even though he then stopped, meaning not that badly broken when trying to carry on. So thumbs up.

From accident itself what I saw and looked couple times afterwards.. Just wondering if there was something in road surface, rain washed soil, fine gravel, oil leak from car tractor whatever, because first rider lost his wheel so seemingly easily and so creating bad luck chain reaction.

Just some thoughts...

Without Van Aert, Visma are disclosed as an overextended robot.

Van Aert - alongside Soler - are the ones who have given this years La Vuelta life and a true expression of how a Grand Tour can be and should be ridden.

We all know Roglic will win.

If it was not for the adventurism of Van Aert and Soler, no one would be interested in the follow up - about five minutes back down the hill - of Mas, Roglic, Carapaz and Landa all presicely measuring each other as they go along trying to claw-back a few seconds from someone called O'Connor.

With the retirement of Van Aert, this years La Vuelta is already finished.

And saying “nothing broken” doesn’t tell us if there was damage to ligaments or cartilage.

I'm not a particular fan of Van Aert, nor do I have anything against him. But I do respect that he weirdly can win.. well, pretty much any stage if he really sets his mind to it*. But this crash really sucks, both for him and this Vuelta, because it just leaves two jerseys kinda meaningless.

* We tend to see more of that nowadays, but I still vividly remember Hushovd winning that mountain stage with the Aubisque in the Tour and going all WTF?!

Very serious concern. Glad he didn't have to spend days in hospital. When I injured mine, I contracted a staph infection and was in hospital on IV antibiotics for a month.

No more racing this year

Best not to rush him again for 3 weeks. The WC would be too hard. Better focus on his recovery and get some mental rest. On to next season.
Hope he doesn’t cut in his schedule again to be fresher for 2 race days and get nothing with a crash or sickness.

It eventually healed as best as could be hoped given the damage. 2004 was meh but felt fine on it again in 05-06 👍

He's enjoying his days off with the family. Saw a picture of him in a bouncy castle with his kids for his birthday. Seems to be doing good, recharging batteries for next season.
