I think Vingegaard will be pleased and displeased at the same time about loosing Wout at the Tour.

Jumbo did spend quite a bit of energy working for Wout's stage dreams in previous Tours in stage 8 this year they used their doms up so Vingegaard sat isolated in the final, not ideal. A team 100% behind him with no other agenda will be great for JoVi and Visma still has a very strong team in all terrains.

But of cause, Wout has these monster outlets of energy that really helps Jonas a lot and sometimes just Wout trying to go into a break to stage hunt, will have UAE shitting themselves and using their team to defend against Wout.

People read way too much into the GW thing IMO, he would also be criticized if he won the race by team orders or if the had a sprint for the line people would be assuming they faked it anyways. It was an incredible move for Jumbo to get two strong riders away to duo it to the line.

It has nothing to do with not being selfish enough, but just not good enough on the moments that matter.

The gift of Gent-Wevelgem was smart in the sense that Laporte worked for him in the Ronde... but then Van Aert himself just couldn't follow the strongest riders in the race.

That's a good question. But I suspect he thinks that a GT that he can ride with a few targeted efforts instead of having to expend huge watts on demand is good prep for the Olympics or WCRR.

The problem isn't the gift of GW. The problem was not getting the big wins he is capable of, was targeting, and actually cares about. If he gifts it or not it makes no difference, it would still be a underperforming season.

That's why it's probably nonsense. Wout's main goal is Flanders and Roubaix. You might even say they're the team's main goal, they really want to win a Monument next year, they've already indicated. He might ride the Giro after, but not with GC ambitions (and I doubt La Gazzetta would be the first to know).

He does at least another 5 seasons in him to compete for Flanders and Roubaix at the top level, while for the Giro the race changes every year and the profile of this year suits him well.

His (former) trainer has already said before that in order for Wout to be a GT contender he has to make a physical transformation. It wouldn't make sense to do so before he has even reached his potential (or what he thinks is his potential) in the spring classics.

Maybe he doesn't believe in achieving that potential anymore as long as MVDP and Pogacar are racing? Because if all 3 are at 100%, and the race is long and hard, WVA won't win.

I can't understand that it will be possible to combine trying to win Roubaix with going for Giro GC. If WVA is serious about the Giro GC he should probably try to be a few kg lighter than what is optimal for a Roubaix bid.
