Can't really compare Wout to VGG or EVP. He's at least a few years older than both of them and has been racing at the highest level a helluva a lot more years than either under huge pressure to perform. The guy won the elite WC in CX three straight years from 2016-2018 and was winning in the elites even before that. VGG and EVP were barely wiping their own arses in 2016...

His second crash this year caused by the team car (Niermann once again) sending all his riders at the front of the bunch to go full gas on a tricky descent into the foot of a categorized difficulty. It's pretty much the same reasons which caused his accident in Dwars door Vlaanderen.

It's tactically optimal but very risky. Van Aert once again pays the price.

Hopefully no serious injuries involved, although crashing like that always leaves some consequences. Another things to notice is, under Rogla, Wout had immense freedom, achieving most of his legendary Tour performances, under Jonas, he is more or less there to ride for Jonas. This is a rather big shift.

That's very harsh on WVA. My take on him - particularly in relation to MVDP - is that without Wout the cycling world would be a lot less entertaining. He has animated lots of races and he is really the rider that has helped to define Van der Poel. I am pretty sure that without Wout almost no one would have considered Van der Poel's cyclocross and some other one day wins as noteworthy. It is surely one of the most fruitful competitive standoffs since Boonen and Cancellara.

Best question is how some Tour favorites are only 11 stages in and have crashed so often. Roglic may have crashing being something that has to factor in.. Wout in double digit percentage for falling off his bike.. Wout obviously has power and speed he is there in multiple sprint stages, gotta ask would Van Aert be more of a factor if he didn't fall off his bike all the time..

This year he's certainly crashed a few times, but in the years before? Can't remember too many instances tbh.

I think his lack of train is a factor here, so he has to sometimes pick a lane that he knows has a high risk, but he doesn't have enough guys to move him to a better position without eating wind.

And if he isn't at 100% he is just that extra little bit of tired, that makes his decision making a little bit worse, which makes a huge difference at this level.
