Typical British response to something which inconveniences them slightly. It seems that most British people have an over-inflated sense of their own importance and cannot accept anything that impedes them even in the slightest.

I like how one guy complained that he had to walk 2 miles (2 MILES!) to work. I guess his time is so important that he can't afford to lose the 30 minutes it would take him to walk that massive distance...

And to Kensington of all places. That's the biggest sob story they could come up with?

I once knew someone who bought The Sun for light reading and The Daily Mail for the serious news and opinions...

as a liverpool fan, I would never buy the former, and as a normal human being, I would never buy the latter.

All on different teams. Wasn't just the national teams there were a few trade teams as well.

Anyway, if anyone wants a laugh read the comments on the Daily Mail website...priceless!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2025981/London-2012-Olympics-Road-race-chaos-drivers-forced-abandon-cars.html

Lol yeah, The traumatized drivers abandoning their cars- I'd love to have been there to see that.

I hate to think what the rest of the world think of the UK, but there is an endemic problem of a substantial quantity of the population here being dumb and self centred. Sad but true.

Theres a world of difference between being a Brit, and being a Daily mail reader. They are a seperate race.

Judge not lest you be judged.

The Mail is the number one paper in this country by a long distance by readership.

Despite socialists calling it misogynist, it is also the only paper with more female readers than male.

I don't read it myself, but I know several Oxford graduates and at least 3 d.phils who read it regularly.

Characterising a newspaper and its readers by the commenters is like assuming the average person stood on alp d'houz in the Tour is represented by posters on this forum.

To be fair, we've been mainly characterising the paper and its readers by... the paper and it's readers! :p

Sure, not all the stories are reprehensible (and neither are all the readers) but it does tend to pander to many of the prejudices that exist within our society (xenophobia, racism etc.).

There are intelligent people who believe in God, Homeopathy and a Tory government. Doesn't mean they aren't wrong. I've tried to read the Daily Mail but it really is filled with hate-filled bile while its' contributors willing distort facts and figures to suit there own ridiculous agenda.

Well, the Sun, the Mail & the Telegraph have a combined readership around 8 times the size of the Mirror, the Independant & the Guardian.

I would contend that is because they cater to the majority political instinct of the nation, aimed at various quality points, whereas the second list caters to an extremely vocal minority.

It is very easy to use accusations of racism to prevent debates which would lead to a more open society, and release frustrations which do exist, and left ignored will be vented in unpleasant voting patterns.

But non of this has anything to do with cycling.

I guess it shows that most people in Briton have these prejudices or, at least, are quite conservative and view left-wing thinking as a threat to their way of life. Naturally, they choose to read papers that print articles which agree with this (just as socialists like to read papers which agree with them).

I don't think that you can read too much into this race other than there's a good chance that it will end in a sprint. Correct?

Not true.

The Scum sells about 1million copies a day more, although arguably most of its readers cant read

January this year.
Scum 3 million
Fail 2 million
Mirror 1.2 million
Star 730,000
Telegraph 650,000
Express 640,000
Times 450,000

I don't think that you can even read that into it. They only went over Box Hill twice. When they do the full nine times in the Olympics I think there's a reasonable chance (wouldn't put it any stronger than that) that it'll break the field up. I could see Phil G or Thor, or Tom B or a number of others getting away from the bunch.

I heard Cav already got in trouble on Box Hill at test event. Anyone know if that was the case?

No, he was right up near the front, with both his teams leading the bunch.

This is Box Hill:

It's a long enough run from Box Hill up to the Mall that Gilbert has roughly 0 chance of making that in a solo unless he has a 2 minute head start. It would need to be a decent sized group, willing to work together and with a solid lead after the final pass to make it stick.

There are many, many reasons that the Sun is scum, Hillsbrough is just a particularly good example.

Speaking of newspapers, Cav made the cover of the Times and the Guardian for winning this. Oh, British cycling coverage...

Nooooo

Its called the Sun.

TSF calls it the Sun because of (if I am correct, please correct me TSF if I am wrong) their coverage of the Hillsbrough disaster

And amongst other things their later disproven allegations that liverpool fans were stealing from the bodies of the dead fans on the pitch, and caused the distaster. Their circulation in liverpool is about 2 copies.
