China now relegated.

Utterly stupid rule. There is no relay batton so why should changeover matter - it should just be get you final man to the line as fast as possible.

I completely agree. Until today, I wasn't aware there was such a rule. And it's not like they got some big advantage for exchanging a little bit early. It's ridiculous.

The UCI has completely butchered the track.

First the reduction in participants, events etc and now the last worlds and this olympics team sprint competitions completely ruined.

Germans get promoted from play off bronze to gold. What a load of nonsense.

Early candidate for least deserved winners - no fault of their own, but a total gift from the judges.

Well, the Chinese only got in thanks to the British being relegated for the same rule violation, didn't they?

eta: brave faces on the Chinese women's faces, good sportspeople anyway; I would be devastated and angry if I were them.

Advantage or not. If they broke the rule they broke the rule. I know nothing of team sprint but if it isn't an advantage to go as late as possible it seems strange that two teams broke the rule.

It's a rule, but it's a stupid rule,

If people want to exchange after half a lap, or 1.5 laps, why shouldn't they.

There's just no reason for it whatsoever.

Of course you could remove the rule and then it would be a slightly different discipline where timing the 'lead out' isn't something you have to be able to do. Just like you could remove the offside rule in football and get a slightly different game. Basically you could say about any rule in sports that there is no reason for it, but any rule there is about a game defines the game in some way.

Re the DQs both Cav and Boardman saying those are the rules, I think someone said trying to hit that mark while going 40 mph + is not easy.

If it was integral to the event and something the fans watched for your little pastiche may make sense, but the event is just about getting round 2 laps as quick as possible. This is a pointless, inconsistently applied hinderance.
