anyone catch the men's four in the rowing a day or so ago?
GB and Aussies within a canvas of each other just before the 1500m mark,
commentator is talking about the two crews and their lead-ups to the games - says that "the Brits chose to do an altitude camp while the Aussies chose to row the kilometers"...
hilarious comment! The only thing that could have bettered it would have been to have said they'd gone to tenerife for the camp.

right before the brits just cruised away from the aussies to win...

I don't know if this has been asked before, but I'd find it very interesting to hear which sports at this Olympics people believe are PED-free. Not counting beta-blockers or anything purely designed to calm the competitors.

The list is depressingly short. Looking at the sports I only see four that I would have confidence in being clean: archery, sailing, shooting, and table tennis (maybe fencing as a fifth).

I see what started off as a general Olympics doping thread has become yet another Brit-bashing thread. As if there weren't enough of them already.

It's been a banner summer for Brit bashing. The main course in July with Sky at the Tour follow by a dessert of piling on the GB track team. As much as I have enjoyed this, even as an American I think I have enjoyed bashing the U.S. swim team the most.

Armstrong & team dominated the Tour. Here we have something much bigger. It's the Tour, most one week stages races and most events on the track for men and women.

Impressive.

This is what bothers me the most, it's the complete domination on both road and track.

Wayde van Niekerk breaks world record to win Olympic gold
Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith, who finished last in 44.61, said: "It was just mental how quick that was.

"I thought I was gaining on them and then [Van Niekerk] kicked in the back straight and I thought, 'What was that?'"

That was ridiculous. I saw him win the world championships last year with an impressive time, and he's definitely been building to a peak. According to wikipedia he also runs a sub-10 100 meters...and sub 20 200. Yikes.

Some of the golfers look clean on the whole. In particular, Jordan Speith and Zach Johnson (given their driving lengths) but they didn't come to Rio. The latter has been consistently good throughout his career. Jordan is an amazing putter in the manner which would impress Gary Player.

after Van Niekerk’s triumph, one reporter asked him whether people can trust his record. “You can’t be anyone’s favourite. What I can do is control the controllables, and stay as disciplined as I can be, and focused on goals and life,” the South African replied. “The beginning of the year I had the opportunity to break the sub-10, as I believe the talent God has blessed me.”
Another reporter said he hasn’t answered the question. What do you say to people who say you are on drugs, the reporter asked. “I know I am not,” Van Niekerk replied.
What with "My doping is Jesus" (http://www.smh.com.au/sport/olympic...hing-10000m-world-record-20160812-gqrmtd.html) I think WADA shouid start investigating the Vatican! :D

Which again goes to show that (and I'm simplifying here) something happened around 2006 that gave the kind of sprinter that up to that time had typically specialized in the longer sprints a speed advantage over the kind that had spesialized in the shorter ones. You would even see older sprinters that had previously moved from the 100 to the 200 move back again and run personal bests.

Bolt is a very lucky guy, as this change in the training<-->drugs paradigm gave him a second chance.

There was a discussion about fencing and shooting upthread (and by extension archery). Apparently beta blockers can have a significant effect on your nerve and your heart rate, and even recreational substances like cocaine and speed could help. Table tennis I'm pretty sure uses PEDs. Sailing is an interesting one; at the Olympic level, I'd hedge my bets but say it was probably clean. Yacht races like the America's Cup, however, are actually incredibly physical - to an extent often underrated. I would be amazed if PEDs weren't used in it.

Really?

Aren't you like in your early 20's. I think every current record will be broken by the Dubai olympics.

Koch's 400m?
FloJo's 100m & 200m?

Yes but for some reason ive been living with the hope that anti doping measures would improve faster than new substances discovered, so gains from doping would be reduced. In track events in athletics, advances in technogy arent going to be significant either (relatively low speeds meaning aerodynamics arent so important either). Therefore, eventually the onus would be on a fairly clean athlete to beat that record

Then again, gene doping could probably even lead to a sub 41

Those will not be broken *clean* in my lifetime unless by a trans* athlete.

(*I am sure some sort of sensible ruling will occur in the next Olympic Cycle in regards non-binary gender athletes, just not sure what it will be)

At the 2015 IAAF World Championships, van Niekerk won the 400 metres gold medal in a time of 43.48 seconds, which at the time was the sixth fastest in history. When the race was over he collapsed on the track, supposedly with exhaustion ?, and was then taken to hospital. Although he later recovered, I,ve have always thought that perhaps it was a reaction to something he may of had in his system. The new world record time of 43.03 is mind boggling. He shaved 0.45 seconds of his personal best and 0.15 seconds of Michael Johnson's WR of 43.18, which had stood for 17 years.
