Well the retesting will affect those who dont have members of their countries high up in IOC or cannot afford the fees for losing positives from retested samples.

The greed of those running sport seems to be a bottomless pit.

Another name to add to the pile of retest positives - Evgeniia Kolodko, who loses a shotput silver from 2012.

46 athletes from 98 named so far.
Nearly all from ex-Soviet countries - 22 Russians, 5 Kazakhs, 4 Azeris, 4 Belorussians, 4 Turks, 3 Armenians, 2 Moldovans, 1 each from Georgia, Ukraine.

30 of the named are weightlifters.

A lot of the positives have been for deydrochlormethyltestosterone, otherwise known as Oral-Turinabol - the drug all the athletes in the East German doping program were given. Seems notable - would think that there would be something more effective than drugs that were used so long ago.

Kolodko tested positive for this, and also ipamorelin - a growth hormone-stimulating peptide which I hadn't heard of before..

They are only catching ex-Soviet athletes? The testing and the retesting are both politicized. Apart from GB and the USA everyone else should go to the beach. No point in coming.

Yeah, several things that are obvious. First and foremost, it's political. Second, it's to try and save IAAF's, IOC's, WADA's, etc behinds...They've hardly done anything in...ever...as far as testing is concerned, so why not start now with backdated tests, on ex-Soviets? Another thing, the technology in Russia still seems to be lacking, using old methods. I can get Moldova or Uzbekistan or another not-so-well off country that has to rely on older methods, but I thought the Russians try and be a bit more astute now. Since this is political, they won't go after any Brits and Americans. They'll stick to what's worked thus far: go after Russians, ex-Soviet countries and poor Asian, ME, SA, etc countries. Or the Brits and Americans are simply using gear that's beyond the testers reach.

lmao ITV report on how Bolt is so great. He eats yams and puts in "hard graft". It mentioned that 21/30 fastest 100m times were by dopers.

Conclusion: "Usain Bolt has probably saved the reputation of his sport"

I've just scanned through the top 100m times and it seems the only person not to test positive apart from bolt in the top 50 is maurice greene!

What about Frankie Fredericks?

Rio Police have issued arrest warrants for the passports of 5 OCI (Olympic Committee of Ireland) members including Vice President of OCI who also is President of the FAI, John Delaney. Ireland is a small nation but it is shining in the Olympic corruptions medal table.

There are many many Pat Hickeys in sport....

I'm not sure this has been mentioned before, but Hickey was one of the most vocal sportsperson speaking against Russia's ban. It' quite understandable he would be targeted for some minor offense. There's even footage circulating of the poor old man being arrested at home in his pijamas. The message is quite clear: don't speak out against the new zeitgeist in sport, or else...

This only gets better if we see the downfall of Delaney.

With the FAI's links to corrupt Denis O'Brien, his lack of interest in the domestic league (see the disgraceful grant he gave to Irish clubs considering his own ridiculous salary), hasn't allowed questions at the last three FAI AGMs, I can't wait to see the back of this guy from Irish football and sport in general.

Of course Hickey was against the Russia ban. His European Games might be held there.

whatever the reason was, he was vocal about it, that is the point.
Talking against Russia ban -> arrested for minor offense, with footage in robe divulged to the world.

He was vocal about it for that very reason. It's an important point. There isn't a long list of cities that were willing to host his European Games. It is basically Russia and that's it at the moment.

Hickey didn't exactly support Yuliya Stepanova either as Kimmage pointed out.

This isn't a minor offense either and Kevin Mallon was arrested first a while back in relation to this. It has led on to Hickey and now to Delaney who is a big name to be targeted in this. He has never said anything about Russia.

the reason he was vocal against the ban is not important. It's irrelevant.

Or else, explain the relevance of it to the point I made: speak against -> prison and embarrassment before the world.

Hickey didn't exactly support Yuliya Stepanova either as Kimmage pointed out.
Kimmage doesn't look particularly sharp. If he missed the most important conclusion from all of this, he certainly isn't. And it's not about Stepanova, it's about IAAF and what they did.

It is a minor offense. Nobody gives a damn about touting, nobody ever will. It always happened and it always will, without consequence. I'm sure that Mallon dude and that Delaney dude are just innocent standbys that had to be sacrificed: Hickey couldn't be arrested without his co-conspirators, right?

Or else, show me footage of them being arrested in their undies.

Of course, the soviets are bad...fucc y'all

Or the ex-Soviets are just worse at doping and thus get caught more frequently.

Nesta Carter tested positive at the 2008 Olympics and he was part of the 4 x 100 m relay team, so if the rules are followed the most famous athlete in track & field, Usain Bolt, will lose a gold medal.

If your conspiracy theory was true then they surely would have protected Usain Bolt's gold medal.

Lets wait till he actually loses the medal. These organisations have a history of doing everything possible to help their favourites.

Saw the Caster Semenya performances the media was whinging about. Don't see how that was anymore ridiculous than several other *** I've seen this olympics or many others. It was nowhere near as ridiculous as Radcliffe and Bolt for example, nor that 400m this year.

Kimmage was writing for an Irish audience. IAAF not of much interest to Irish readers. Where are the British papers talking about Coe, Reedie and Farah?

What issue is there with Semenya? Was she not born with high levels of ability?

Whereas Bolt has to dope to get high levels of ability.

Why is Semenya the problem?

Seems to me this is all arseways. An athlete with born ability is persecuted but those who dope hugely are protected. Yep that is modern sport.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not claiming any other paper or reporter is sharp. Kimmage, despite all his past just doesn't seem a sharp person. I would expect reporter with an anti-doping stance to, if not focus, at least mention the important bit that has any relevance in all of this, to show he has an understanding how things work, regardless of the audience. Or he's just settling old scores, which makes him little more than a sell-out. Best to just not be a sharp person, I say..

I agree that Kimmage isn't that sharp. I can't forget that he believed in the Millar fraud when any remotely rational person knew Millar was lying through his teeth, something he now admits. I also remember laughing when Kimmage said that cycling had a chance to become clean in 1999 by banning Armstrong. As if Basso, Ullrich, Heras and co wouldn't have spent the next decade riding on EPO if that had happened.

To be fair, I think the big issue with Semenya isn't doping.

I don't think she went full-out though. I actually met her once (back in 2012, couple of weeks before the Olympics I believe), she's friendly, it kind of surprised me.

I'm with you on this. Malcolm Gladwell, a pseudo-intellectual pompous shallow-thinking 'writer' whose ideas have now permeated the discourse of sports, parroted by writers like Syed, was quoted in the New Yorker as saying
“One woman, born with the biological equivalent of a turbocharger, is now being allowed to ‘compete’ against the 99 per cent of women who have no such advantage.’’

Well, yeah. That's literally the point. 99% of women aren't good enough to compete in the Olympics. Most people don't have large lungs, or long legs, or athletic talent. You can't ban people just for being too good.

The hypocrisy is that the IAAF allowed others to dominate events for years, Michael Johnson 400m and now look at Bolt over 3 Olympics? I mean sure Semenya would dominate for a long time, but at least it may be natural talent for a change!
