I saw their stats earlier and was struck by how they've settled into a pretty similar level of total medals, but obviously getting more of them in golds makes such a difference to the table position - comparing their Rio to Paris performance for example. Personally, I think it's great when countries expand the number of sports they perform well in, as it probably has a knock-on effect in terms of more diverse sporting interests and facilities. China seems to have steadily increased the number of sports they are competitive in over the years, and without looking into it too deeply I get the impression the Brits are also doing quite well in that sense, as they seem to be winning medals in more/new areas (while being less dominant in some, like in the velodrome and sailing). Countries like Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands have had great games, some memorable performances - hope to see African countries become more competitive overall, Botswana joining the East Africans as top medal contenders was great to see.

GB stats:

Its worth highlighting TeamGB only had to have converted one more Gold medal in the Velodrome, and theyve been repeating this stat which says theres normally a 30% conversion rate, and we were below that this time (well obviously) but an extra gold would have meant topping the cycling medal table overall.

so I think the reports of a demise are a tad premature.

and there was an expectation to win more medals in sailing, gymnastics & hockey, than they did which would have boosted the numbers, it felt like there were alot more 3rd places as the table shows than before, and alot more 4th places which the table doesnt show. sometimes you do your best and your best still isnt good enough to win a medal.

I think also alot of athletes in some events were struggling for some reason this time around, because of external factors, the pressure of expectations, injury, illness.

one thing they have analysed already is each medal cost roughly 3.7million pounds in funding.

as far as I understood, problem in this case was also that the event was entered by the World DanceSport Federation, normally responsible for more classical types of dance events. They basically turned into the responsible governing body for breakdacing from one day to the other, because their other disciplines were not considered by the IOC.

So while the sport itself is very competitive, athletes were not organized in this federation before.
Kind of a bummer breaking won't be back for the LA Olympics, breaking as an Olympic competition was obviously in its very infancy and the structuring and everything needed a lot of work. But seeing as breaking (or breakdancing) originated in NYC you'd think the US might be willing to give it another go. (I do realize LA chose sports way before breaking debuted at the Paris Olympics, so its exclusion in LA has nothing to do with how it fared at the Paris Olympics.)

Ah well, guess we still have flag football though with possibly some retired or semi-retired NFL players. :(

Flag ‘football’ in the Olympics. What a joke.
They have already shown live coverage of the 16-18 yr old US Championship on live TV right before the Olympic games began. Be prepared to see more and more of it in the coming years. It is all tied to the push to ban tackle football for anyone under 17 in the US. Lawyers win again. And yes, I do think it is dangerous as hell for kids to be banging their heads around.

Safetyism and lawyers, some of the most insidious threats we face in the 21st century.

I don't mind flag football for kids at all because what responsible parent would want for their kid to have his/her brain (or body) potentially scrambled before s/he even reaches their teens? (Knowing what we know now about the effectiveness of helmets and all.) But...

At what point would it be safe for at least teens to switch from flag to tackle? The basics of the game I think are basically the same, but how the goal is reached is very different. (This is probably a conversation for a different thread.)

To compete for Australia in breakdancing, you only had to register at the federation, pay $20, and win a qualifying tournament. Only 15 women took part. Neither of them was any good.

It resulted in 0 points in Paris and a lot of laugh on social media, though.

Here's the final battle of the qualifying tournament

It's a nice idea to celebrate successful Olympians, but the statues could do with a few tweaks (brings back memories of the Michael Jackson statue Fayed installed at Fulham's football stadium)

I'm sure the artist(s) had good intentions and maybe they didn't have much material to work with, but the result is really questionable.

Reminds me of the bust of Ronaldo where you really have to wonder where the artist's head was at the time. I don't think lack of material was the issue in that instance.

Ashad Nadeem winning gold in the javelin throw seems to be a much more remarkable story than I first thought. He won the commonwealth games before and was 2nd at the world championships, but apparently still only owned one single javelin, which was damaged in March. He had to start a crowdfunding compaign to get the money to buy a new one:

He now was rewarded with almost 1 Million US$, but maybe the local authorities should consider to support their athletes before instead. From seven participants in this year's Olympics, 6 had to pay the flights out of their own pocket.

The mixed relay in swimming was mad. Brazil get a phantom world record despite finishing only third. The Chinese swimmer on the last leg is basically a human torpedo.

Okay, I fully understand why DR2 is shifting over to the Taekwondo bronze match with the Danish fighter, but... at least continue the athletics online.
I can't be the only one whose viewing preferences is based on sports, not on whether there's someone from my own country involved.

Back at the athletics!
Question:
In wheelchair racing, can we talk about a "peloton"?

Okay, I would really like to have seen the closeup of De Jong's first "take-off"...
And just to be clear; his last jump is a World Record, but it's also his third Paralympic Record of the evening.
