A bid for slick Mick would no doubt get a few points in the bag (Cali & andilucia) and gain a bit of attention from race organisers from a credible gc perspective.

Neither Cali nor Andalucía pay UCI points. They do pay points to the UCI Continental Calendars, but as Mick rides for a ProTour team he's ineligible to score points in these.

Actually, Cancellara (250pts), McEwan (105pts), Tuft (56pts), Roberts (56pts) gives them 467pts from just these 4 riders - about 30pts clear of Team Sky's total points for the year (at 435 according to the UCI website) so were they to secure Cancellara, they would be well inside the top 17 this year. And their "old men and neo pros" couldn't do much worse than the big black bus did in their first year on the big stage.

However i'm not sure that Gillette wouldnt get so many invites, with Cervelo folding, the Tour de France for example might have 6 wildcards:
Schlecks, Footon, 2-3 french teams and?The ASO might rather invite the Australians than Vaccansoleil, if they can hire some big names like Cancellara and Rogers.

Vacansoleil have put in a lot of money and sponsorship into ASO events, they may not be able to ignore them again. Rogers is supposed to have gone to Sky and let's be honest is not going to be a big name at the Tour.

If Bbox survive, that's three, maybe all four big French teams (Bbox, Ag2r, Cofidis, FDJ) requiring a wildcard, which would really put a spanner in the works, plus there's Saur-Sojasun and Brétagne-Schuller hope to step up to ProContinental next year too.

Four French teams, the Schlecks and Geox (with Menchov and Sastre) would leave no room for manoeuvre, and if it came down to it I think a former winner and one of last year's podium would take precedence over Mick Rogers and Fabian Cancellara.

How do you reccon 6 wildcards for the GTs? If the top 17 rule is scrapped then how will teams be decided? The way I see it it will be one of three posibilities:

1. No teams are guaranteed participation which would mean 22 wild cards.

2. The teams with PT licenses would need to participate which would mean 18 guesranteed and 4 wild cards.

3. Some new system yet to be announced.

Don't be surprised if they make an offer for Rogers...

Hasn't Rogers already ruled out a move to the Fly-V team? Personally I think BMC would be the best fit, especially if he no longer wants to contend the GT's, although as others have said he may actually be a good buy for Team Sky if the rumours are true

Assuming that the 17 team automatic qualification rule is still in place, the other way of looking at it is that there is a very real chance that only two of six wildcards will be sucked up by the four big French teams. Bbox still seem quite likely to go to the wall (which would be terrible), while Ag2r are currently in 17th place (and everyone connected to the UCI and ASO will be hoping they stay there).

That would leave the ASO with four wildcards. One of which will no doubt go to the Schleck team. There will be a lot of teams eyeing those remaining three wildcards, including a number of teams which ordinarily would be considered to have no chance.

Dave B wants Porte to Sky. Can't see it being a good move. Sky seems to be the place people go to see out their careers with a safe contract.

Mick Rogers linked also despite Dave B saying he'd never touch him.

Pegasus Sports chief executive Chris White last night revealed that in addition to the 25-rider ProTour team, the US-based 14-rider Continental team that operated as Fly V Australia will continue, but under sponsorship of Virgin Blue. And with his Australian-based under-23 team of 10 riders that began last year as Virgin Blue-RBS Morgan, a seven-rider women's team will also operate as Virgin Blue-RBS Morgan.

Racing team chief executive Chris White is due to present his final ProTour licence application to the UCI on Friday week. He has said that he is optimistic about the chances of getting the licence.

“I have spoken to several different people over the past couple of years in Australia about the possibility of an Australian ProTour team,” McQuaid told VeloNation recently. “All I can say is that the UCI would welcome a ProTour team from there as Australian cyclists are very strongly represented in the ProTour, at the top level of the sport.
