Now I almost have to like him! Love these stories!
I dont think he will a chance to win it. He has to really step up from the past few years and I honestly dont see that happening. The team he signed for does not excite me at all either.
His offseason has not been the best it seems and I think he will have a hard time.
I hope I am wrong.

He'll definitely go for it, but with van Aert going for it his chances look slim, since it's hard to name something Sagan is better at than van Aert nowadays.
Wout has never gone for GT Point classification. He can sprint faster than Sagan, he can climb faster than Sagan, and he can TT faster than Sagan, and he can go faster on a CX course than Sagan. Sagan is yesterday's news, past his prime, and just really enjoying his fame and fortune.
Agreed. Intermediate sprints and not having to work for a GC favorite is in Sagan's favor.
That's the point. We don't know whether Wout will be able to keep his form for three weeks and/or how good he is in the control who will be in the break game.
OTOH after his crash at 2018 TdF (i.e., past his prime) Sagan won two GT PQ's and he finished in the second place three times.

No, I don't think we are. If Van Aert targets the jersey and is allowed to focus on it, he will win it.
Recovery in itself clearly is not a question and of course he can contend for green.
However requirements for a domestique+stage hunter are quite different from those for a serious PQ contender and he will have to race in a very different manner. As he did not ride in such a manner before, I am not so sure that he will automatically succeed.

I think he only might have a problem if Jakobsen or someone sweeps the flat sprints.

I remember Sagan writing in his book that he would always be able to finish top5 in a bunch sprint because he's just better than the others at surfing wheels and positioning himself.
Finishing 4th yesterday doesn't necessarily mean his shape is good enough to get over the Poggio with the other top classic riders. Or even win a reduced group sprint if he manages to.
