Bertie, obviously

Home soil, a point to prove perhaps? A course some might say even designed for him... cough....

It'll be good to watch a GT that isn't won by tempo riding

Think Froome was unwell again, and apparently only started training for the Tour in April of this year.

Correct, Contador is the yardstick, and I think that he will become stronger as the race develops. I don't think that his performance will suffer overly due to the absence (the gap has been much shorter than previous bans).

With the CAS hearing looming AC was also under a great deal of mental pressure during the Giro. Lets be honest, even taking this into account he utterly blitzed the field. Although he lacks competition, now that he is rested he should in theory perform better (I hope!).

lol, there's a post that belongs in the clinic if ever there was one. Think how good Froome could've been if he'd been training before April ;)

From The BBC this morning.

Two of the first four finishers in the Tour de France, Britain's Chris Froome and Belgium's Jurgen Van den Broeck, are to ride in the forthcoming Tour of Spain.

Froome, second behind Bradley Wiggins, and Van den Broeck, fourth in the final overall classification, will be up against the Tour's major absentee, Spain's Alberto Contador, as he returns from suspension.

VdB good, I'm beginning to appreciate him. I liked his Tour, leading the assault against Team Sky, but like Nibali, he hasn't the level.

There is three reasons why AC will win
1. He is kinda awesome.
2.He is the best GT rider of his generation
3. Froome got the tour in his leggs. You can be as good as you want but that will be a problem nontheless.

Disregarding the first 2, #3 makes sense. I still voted for Froome, tho, because Alberto has only shown us second rank performances since he got popped. Riis has just said AC has not been training properly either. Froome, on the other hand, has shown, if anything, that Sky has got the training right.

My big question will be does Froome want the Vuelta this year?

Please explain that comment with regards to the 2011 Giro.

First I've heard of this. Do you have a link?

You may not know, but there is a 3 week Grand Tour called the Giro D'Italia , of which in the 2011 edition Alberto Contador beat the second placed rider by 6Min & 10 seconds and had a gap of 6Min & 46 sec to a certain Vincenzo Nibali, who finished third. That Giro was widely considered one of the hardest Grand Tours ever, and even after that and a few first week crashes he finished 5th at the 2011 Tour, achieving top 5 at both Giro & Tour, whereas many other riders who rode the Giro performed badly at the Tour.
If that constitutes a second rank performance, I wonder what your first rank performances would be??

Well, want very probably yes, but can he after Le Tour?
But maybe he has some anger in his belly, since he had to hold back so much :p

Is this even a contest?

Even 2007 Contador already went faster uphill than Froome. Contador now would destroy all life uphill

Riis has never said this. Only the opposite, that Contador has trained very hard and so on.

Shouldn't all the July cycling fans have left by now? Or is there a little extra Froome fanboy syndrome keeping them around?

Going to be a boring Tour of Spain.

The Spanish gig needs an epic like what it had back in 1987 and of course not forgetting the 1988 race ;)

it wont , at least you ll see some actual attacking , even if berto lays the giro smackdown on the field , its way more entertaining than this last TDF

I went back and checked - the Riis comment was about Andy. Sorry. My mistake.

What about your comment that AC has done only second rate performances since the 2010 TdF? Would you explain your reasoning, please?

Was wondering the same. Cause if you ask me, the giro 11 was probably his strongest ever (tour 09 had to few real mountains to show his dominance).

I'm afraid spanish authorities can hesitate to touch Contador and it might decide the outcome not in favour of the rivals. If not, Froome will win relatively easily.
