what do you mean? criticizing religion is very constructive. the fewer people who let someone else decide what is right and wrong, as many american catholics already do, the better off this world will be. they probably realize the pope is irrelevant.

the OP wanted to discuss the pope's resignation. criticism is a part of discussion.

Funny you should say that - my American daughter-in-law is a serious, practicing catholic. I just asked my son what her reaction was to this news. His reply - "she hasn't mentioned it, I doubt she cares either way."

And yes, his position on homosexuality, birth control and the like is backwards and hurts millions of people.

i have not insulted anybody. nor have i insulted religion. two things that are not the same, by the way. i only asked the question, "what is wrong with slagging the catholic church"? if people are insulted by that, the problem lies with them, not in the question.

this is not a church. it is a public forum. a place open for robust discussion. i wouldn't go to a church to make fun of what people do in private. likewise, i wouldn't go to a synagogue or mosque to do the same. however, if somebody brings up a thread about judaism, islam, scientology, flying spaghetti monster, etc., i will express my candid opinion about that silliness as well.

Well, certainly not the issue of whether or not a donkey and an ox were present where Jesus was born. I was thinking more along the lines of, why is homosexuality a sin? Why can't women be priests? That sort of thing.

The audience of The Daily Show is predominantly democrat, though. When Jon Stewart has gone to conservative shows to make his point, he's used different tactics because it's not the same medium or the same audience. That's why his criticism of the democrats is remarkably different from his criticism of the republicans: the former is played mostly straight, almost completely serious sometimes, while the latter is more about having a laugh at how ridiculous they are. Point is, he doesn't care for the republicans engaging in a debate in the terms he uses on The Daily Show. This is a public forum and the thread was started by someone whose views are 100% opposed to yours. Nothing's gonna come out of it if you alienate that side of the ideological spectrum. There'll be no debate.

Although, I remember the pope getting some media attention in his christmas speech where he implied something about homosexuality. Seeing how the media reacted to that, I can understand why he doesn't talk about those sorts of issues all the time

Pope Benedict XVI resigns. Very significant news. I know this won't be popular to say on here but I think his service to the Church and peace is very commendable and should congratulated.

Before anyone else goes in, I might as well mention these slurs: pedophile, sexual assault, homophobia, gay marriage.
