I have not seen anything about wind on either day, but race situation could play a role. Basso was trying to win the Giro and went full gas. He crushed the field quickly and it was a mountain top finish. Contador still had another climb to go and was saving his matches.

Not for the climb itself, but for Pescara on Sunday:

And for May 15, 2006:

Now the data is from a station in Pescara, NE from the climb and on the coast. Don't know the area, but 54km away by car, or (guessing) 30k away as the crow flies. Still, if it is similar there, it was probably similar on the climb.

Thanks,

There is a lot of terrain between Pescara and Lanciano so not sure if it is comparable

The most awesome VeeToo tweet form all time!

@ammattipyoraily: @BrianCooksonUCI Saumont climb (6.45 km, 6.78 %, 437 m [541 m → 978 m])
Brian Cookson: 34 min 09 sec, 11.33 Kph, VAM 768 m/h

That VAM is suspect.

Passo Lanciano is not far from Pescara. I know it well. You can stand on one side of Passo Lanciano facing the sea and Pescara is easily seen on the coast. There are no mountains or hills blocking the view. But the side climbed in TA is not on the coastal side. So wind readings from Pescara not applicable. Weather readings from Chieti would be closest.

You are right, I mixed up the location. For some reason was thinking of the Marche region north of that.

How about the last 5-5.5 km? That's where Froome got tired of waiting around!
