For future reference, a summary like this should probably be paired with the average gradient for each individual km. The final kms are all pretty evenly flat, and they were over a minute slower there than in the final km, and slower even than on the steeper portions beforehand. Even if we factor in the sprint it shows some pretty significant soft-pedalling on the flatter sections.

Re:

Using that 64 Kg figure and the published power numbers (above), the results from Stage 15 were telling. The GC battle was on during the final climb. Kruijswijk held 6.3 W/Kg for 33m54s, which means so did the small group he finished with (all finished within a handful of seconds of each other):

2 Miguel Angel Lopez (Col) Astana Pro Team 0:00:28
3 Simon Yates (GBr) Mitchelton-Scott 0:00:30
4 Alejandro Valverde (Spa) Movistar Team 0:00:32
5 Steven Kruijswijk (Ned) LottoNL-Jumbo
6 Enric Mas (Spa) Quick-Step Floors 0:00:34
7 Nairo Quintana (Col) Movistar Team

Thibaut Pinot got away on the climb and finished alone ahead of the rest (and presumably had a slightly higher power to weight ratio):

1 Thibaut Pinot (Fra) Groupama-FDJ 5:01:49

Surely Lopez's climbing speed today is worth a comment?

8.8km @6.6% climbed at 25.4km/h ? Clinic has gone to sleep it needs to wake up.
He's in Astana which has a rich history

Nairo crushes the Galibier!

Impressive, given this was from a breakaway and the third climb on a long, hot stage mostly at altitude. The Quintana group rode the Izoard a lot slower than the GC guys, so he probably was keeping a lot in reserve there, and of course, there was a tailwind on Galibier...

Yes. Also impressive as I keep reading comments that he has under performed since 2016 after beating Froome in the Vuelta or that he should not train in Colombia. Demolished a few myths in today's ride, Galibier tailwind or not. Good on him! I hope he can do his record better justice in his new team that would be great retribution.

So apparently just to make the breakaway at the vuelta you have to crank over 6 w/kg for 20 minutes? That's surprising to me. (Most of the time on this forum we only hear about the GC guys.)

Not for 20 minutes. For this time many riders have done it in the WT.

Indeed, Quintana’s time today of 28:05 – some 15 seconds faster than Pantani’s – is the only time in the top 16 that wasn’t set at the Tour de France.

The other day I watched a clip of Vandenbroeke climbing in the big ring in the '99 Vuelta. And I had the thought: 'this was better.'

A nuclear Quintana....can't help but think: yes, bring it on.

How many of the above actually finished at Chalet Reynard
The 1994 tdf stage went all the way over ventoux and finished after a descent. Pantani attacked the GC group before Chalet Reynard, but you're right, it's not a fair comparison since Pantani et al had to keep going for another 6km.

Some sources claim a tailwind, but Iljo Keisse tweeted no wind. Where exactly did 6.8 come from, was it calculated or measured?

That part on Ventoux being in a forest doesn't usually have much wind, at best a very slight uphill draft due to thermal effects. I'm not at home and don't have here all the information needed for a more accurate calculation, but using what I have I get about 6.65 W/kg for Quintana.
