Yep. This is something completely different but every bit as funny. It looks like the CDO and head of marketing at Movistar is a big data geek and cycling fan who has decided to build up a fun little side project (I'm guessing as a treat for his team and as an excuse to play around a bit). It's obviously annoying the heck out of Unzue. But, the data is already there, and Eusebio knows where his bread gets buttered, so he'll ignore it as politely as he can (which is to say, glorious amounts of side-eye).

Chema Alonso: Eusebio, you got a minute?
Eusebio: Yeah. Take a seat.
Chema Alonso: You can't start Nairo in the Tour. You'll have to start Bennati.
Eusebio: Yeah, I don't want to go fifteen rounds, Chema. The lineup card is mine, and that's all.
Chema Alonso: That lineup card is definitely yours. I'm just saying you can't start Nairo in the Tour.
Eusebio: Well, I am starting him in the Tour.
Chema Alonso: I don't think so. He rides for HP BTP–Auber93 now.

Chapeau.

Cant believe I had to go to the 3rd page to find the Quintana thread.

So - What does Michael Rasmussen mean on Twitter :- ??

"Time to kick it #Giro100 if you have it. @NairoQuinCo once again decided to add 1% of his body weight by carrying and extra bottle "

Whats in the bottle ?

I'm going to have a wild guess and say water. Rasmussen was a notorious weight weenie who only had a single bottle cage on his bike. He justifiably thinks it's stupid if riders have a full bidon they're not gonna drink weighing 0.7 kg on a summit finish. Twice as stupid with two as Pinot has done several times. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Most of the time, even.

Quintana whilst most likely doping, is probably the least suspicious of all the top GC riders. He is a mountain specialist who is actually built like a climber but hasn't got the power to perform well enough in time trials to make him an all rounder. The big powerful 6 foot TT specialists such as Froome who are also able to climb well are the most suspicious riders. And that's not even taking into account that Froome wasn't even a top time trialist before his transformation. History tells us that it is easier for a TT specialist to turn himself into a climber rather than a mountain goat to turn himself into a TT'er. Dumoulin has almost found the right ingredients and Jungels will be next but he is still a work in progress.

Charly Gaul & Rudi Altig -> grand tour champions!

I wonder how Quintana will do in this ITT. He did a weirdly good ITT at the Vuelta two years ago, and the Friars IMO have a history of going the extra mile when an unexpected opportunity presents itself (Pereiro, Arroyo) rather than pushing the envelope at all times.

Quintana probably has 20 different substances in him but ontheroad's point is valid; it's possible to look at him and claim plausible deniability. A guy like Froome, not really.

We know that cycling is a show but there's a part of us that wants to pretend that it's real, at least while we're watching.

he's definitely on some new undetectable peptide or some sort, by its obvious his doctor and him are a bit hesitant in the dosage in fear of glow times as his performance shows he's not as strong in the mountains anymore. So back to private roads in colombia and tweak his hot sauce his doc will have to do in order for him to regain that 2014 form.

Not disputing what you wrote so much ... but, isn't that what they should have done after his sub-par performance in the 2016 TDF, and got right then?

Compare to Quintana, only Van Impe and Pantani comes to mind.

I am not sure if Pereiro and Arroyo were out of the ordinary. For sure doping but nothing different to what any other rider were regularly doing.

Pereiro were gifted way too many minutes anyway. On the other hand the other as well. :D

I have little doubt that Q is not restricting his off season diet to bread and water. However, as has been noted, he fits the "classic climber" performance envelope, and he sure looked pretty mortal in the Giro. In other words, he's not attracting undue suspicion. I quite like him as a rider and I worry that a lot of the criticism of him is very subtle racism. He's always on the sharp end, that's undeniable.

I saw some comments in a Giro stage thread comparing his looks unfavourably to Nibali and Contador.

Hopefully these posters are just idiots rather than outright racists.

yup...23rd in first ITT and 27th in final when the Giro depended on it...so a climber that can't really TT..

some dopers really are more equal than others....

the 'fat inside' one beats quintana in the mountains and Tony Martin in TT's (when he's ill)...

Lol, so it's racist if one doesn't like Nairo's looks?

No. But it is racist if you decide this has anything to do with Quintana's appearance rather than you being conditioned to be attracted to people with European features and being unused to seeing indigenous South Americans (due to the incredible level of historical persecution they have faced).

This quote is from the stage thread on Saturday and is racist whether it's intentional or not.

"Quintana comes last, he looks like an old Peruvian woman who's spent 90 years on the sunblasted windswept hills of Machu Picchu"

What's the verdict on Quintana's beauty amongst people attracted to people with indigenous South American features, then?

His criticism reminds me a bit like Evans. Because of the way he rode in the mountains. He could be in similar situations.

Not sure about the racism. For sure some are in Europe, but I doubt they will show it in the forum. If they are and criticize Quintana will most likely do it based on performance rather than appearance.

I have no idea and i'm not really interested.

But these comments are in the same kind of area as saying Chinese people look the same or Africans have funny hair and lips. If people want to talk about which riders they are attracted to that's fair enough but don't talk riders down because of their racial heritage.
