Alpe D'huez

37 Nairo Quintana Colombie Tour de France 2013 (#18) 39'50 6.25 w/kg 426

Why hasn't this ET performance been mentioned ? lol

Wait, wait, wait: Quintana put out more w/kg, in the third week of his tour in 2013, than Froome did on his 'mutant' stage 10 this year, the one that broke the internet, Even Froomes biggest estimates was 6.09 w/kg, and that was the first mountain stage of the tour, and it was after a rest day! That is brilliant :D :D :D :D :D

He's never been in the yellow jersey, makes a big difference to the level of scrutiny.

Bingo. While he has won a GT, has he made one boring through domination? Has his team declared him clean and smarter than everyone about training in the english-speaking media? Has he repeatedly insulted the intelligence of cycling fans? Does he have legions of fans defending his cleanliness despite all evidence to the contrary?

Nope. Pretty much everyone who understands the sport assumes him to be as doped as everyone else. Not terribly controversial, so not much chatter.

Well he did win the Giro.

He has much evidence as critics have on Froome, some estimates on w/kg he produces, almost beating Froome & Sky in his first tour at 23, people not sure what he does or if he is tested in Colombia, then you mix it all together to have little evidence but if you believe in your theory long enough, you will find a way to make it work. Some people just have a gut feeling on who's doping and who isn't

Lol, pretty obvious baiting.

So 39:20 is what I'm hearing. 21st fastest time ever, matching the big house.

It's a bit quicker than Sastre in 08 and to find someone better, you have to go back to 2006.

The great natural climber Andres Klöden was almost a minute quicker then.

Only 39:30 or so for the climb. I am disappointed.
He did break the record up Col de la Croix de Fer though, if that's any consolation for you

When did they last go up Croix de Fer from that side? 2008, probably? Don't think it's used that much, so not sure how meaningful a fast time up it is.

An HC climb that's been ridden 29 times in the Tour? Pretty important.

There are 3 sides of that climb.

The one they did today was ridden in 2008 and 1995 (thanks to the climbing records blog). In the same period they climbed 2 other sides at least 6 times.

Great. The point is that it's an HC climb preceding another one, and he set incredible times up both. How 39:20 isn't mind-blowing just shows how comfortable everyone is with the insanity we're watching.

Oh, can it. Whatever they're doing now is clearly less than the were doing ten years ago. On a short stage, one guy went faster than 40:30.

In 2003's first mountain stage, Iban Mayo won the Alpe D'Huez stage with a climb of 39:08, Armstrong was 02:12 behind, i.e. his ascent time was over 41:00. Both were on the juice.

There's no visible difference now, IMO.

Especially when you consider the parcours this year, it's the 4th day in the Alps and 20 days into the Tour.

17th quickest all time, unreal.

Exactly, the goal posts keeps moving and not even the clinic can recognize "not normal" anymore.
The W/kg numbers game has made everybody doubt their eyes and instincts.

Stupid embedded quotes.

My point is that the time in itself up Croix de Fer doesn't mean that much when there were other people making the tempo for the vast majority of it and a lot of people ended up relatively close to Quintana over the top.

Quintana's attack was about 7 minutes in duration and he was paced by Serpa and Valverde in parts so it's difficult to tell how much effect it had for the final climb.
