Tiago is doing well because he a) is talented, b) is under the illusion that if he rides his socks off and gets wins and does well he stands a chance of being taken to the Tour.

Silly Tiago. You are in the same position with the Hog as Vacansoleil were in with the ASO.

Tiago seems the polite young man.
Stark contrast to many other youngsters:

"If Bruyneel says so, (No Tour) I trust him because he's the world's best directeur sportif," said Machado in Angers. "To ride the Tour de France or not, I have no stress about that."

Machado is keeping his position as one of RadioShack's top performers of 2010 in perspective. "I'm not the best rider in the team," he said. "There are Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, Andreas Klöden, Yaroslav Popovych, etc. They are waiting for July to perform. If you win the Tour de France, the rest of the season gets forgotten.

"If Lance had been able to participate today, I would have finished second," said the humble Machado.

I think Machado is also doing well because he's a hyper-aggressive rider naturally. I think Bruyneel's conservative DS style works best with riders who by nature are aggressive. Armstrong was very aggressive when he was younger. So was Contador before Bruyneel got his hands on him. Machado fits that bill as well. I think that type of rider can benefit from Bruyneel's DS style.

Congratulations to Chris Horner on a strong attack and a fourth place stage finish earning the team 1 UCI point. He's now the fifth Radio Shack rider with UCI points this year, so it counts for the world team ranking.

Bruyneel gave him high praise yesterday. Bruyneel doesn't usually praise anyone.
Methinks this has little to do with Machado's performances and more to do with Machado saying all the right words to the media and not challenging Bruyneel's orders on the road.

What is it with You and the Shack's UCI POINTS?

Geez, have you overlooked the fact that "he bribed the UCI $500,000"?

Points Schmoints.

At least one of the Radioshack can attack like he has two balls. Good job, Chris!

Contador made statements about it in the past.

He said that before getting with Bruyneel, he would ALWAYS attack... and that he lost many races by attacking too much. He'd blow himself out then be passed by someone who was waiting and conserving energy.

He said Bruyneels biggest influence was in keeping him from attacking... telling him to wait... wait... wait... until it was time to attack.

I'll look to see if I can find the quote.

Fortunately, Contador remembered not to listen to Bruyneel at last year's Tour.

Yea, I've noticed that Machado has managed some nice sycophantic comments about Lance whenever he's asked, the whole "it's no shame being beaten by the second best bike rider in the world, when the best bike rider in the world is your team leader" stuff he came out with in Algarve, and the "if Armstrong had been here he'd have beaten me" stuff from his TT win yesterday... Bruyneel also chewed him out a few weeks back, so Bruyneel giving him high praise is either a pseudo-apology, or a kind of 'good dog' pat on the head because Tiago's done what he asked.

Tiago seems to be a humble family man.

No riding around in 100,000 euro sports cars....
No hobnobbing with pop stars....

Can you even imagine Tiago being covetous of another rider's wheelset?
Me neither.

Now, how about Horner!

I am looking forward to seeing Horner chase down an attacking Vino in the TdF....
fighting it out man-to-man for the stage win!

Hope the two "grumpy old men" can make it into the TdF Healthy & Strong.

Does anyone know why Chris Horner wears yellow shoes?

Just curious. Is there a specific reasoning or just because he likes em?

Mavic shoes, a lot of pros wear them. no other significance.

I ride them and like them but couldn't stomach the yellow. The conservative choice is white, which is not much better. I like that they weigh and cost less than the Sidis that I've used for years. The tops are all synthetic so the lifespan may be the compromise.

I don't think it would have made a difference if he did. He may have won by a smaller margin... but riding conservatively he still would have won.

Did he ever not listen to Bruyneel after Arcalis? I don't think Bruyneel told him not to go at the end of Verbier.

After that, Contador was in "Ride the Schleck Wheel" mode... very conservative... very Bruyneel-like. Younger Contador might have attacked on Ventoux (and he looked like he could have done so and won the stage).

And he should probably ride the same way if they manage to whittle down the contenders. It's arguably harder to repeat as champion than surprise a champion.

I think "Younger Contador" might reappear this year. There was the one stage this year where he said he had no idea where to attack on a climb, and went too early. But on days when he his legs feel good, I think he'll go. And he'll spend tons of time on TdF recon so he can decide ahead of time where he wants to attack, and practice it. At the electric MTB presentation he said that this year the Tour will be different, and the team wants to get control early and build the best lead they can. I don't see him getting a lead and going conservative to protect it. I think he'll go Pirate:D

Sorry to have interrupted the Radio Shack Rampage, but I did well not mentioning the podium sweeps, so... And kudos to Tiago once again. I hope he'll find himself in a different situation next year.

I think that on pros the yellow is great for marketing. They jump out at you from the peloton.

It helps to get PAID to wear something that loud, too. The locals give me enough crap as it is.
