At the bus, he looked at his white time trial bike that had been brought out for his warm down ahead of Saturday’s 59.4-kilometer stage. What he said next to the mechanic indicated that this Giro d’Italia might be another missed grand tour opportunity for the 30-year-old.

“I’m not doing any pedaling,” Porte said. “My knee’s f—ked.”
:(
And Richie is not known to exaggerate injuries. Poor guy.

richie is still 100% in this race.

people who say it's a one man show are just nuts, or have never seen a gt before. there is still a VERY tricky 60k tt and the whole third week left. if you've looked at the profile for next week, it should have at least crossed your mind that 5 minutes is not a lot of time.

gts can be brutally capricious. have you ever seen a front-runner crash out? have you ever seen a rider bonk and lose 10 min on a single mtf? have you ever seen a great champion rise to the occasion and stamp his authority on a race? am i the only one here who remembers fuente de?

i'm not saying that richie is a great champion on the level of contador. but he still has a chance to do something great here, to prove himself.
is it ideal to be 5 min down after the 'easy' half of the giro? obviously not. but come on. get a hold of yourselves. we are just getting started.

i'm no sky fan, but i like richie. i expect aru to crack hard and bleed several minutes pretty soon, probably tomorrow.
there's no way uran will be able to hang with porte in the mountains next week.
it's very likely that everyone sitting in the top 10 right now will get shelled. there will be a stage next week where bertie and richie ride away together leaving everyone else MINUTES behind. i expect aru will be the best of the rest.
i give porte a 75% chance of being on the podium, probably in second place. if the pistolero crashes or cracks, he could still win it.
let's see how well he responds tomorrow before declaring his race over.

I wished I shared your optimism. But if Richie's knee really is "f—ked" as he himself said then that isn't going to happen. On the other hand his comment was probably made out of frustration and before the true extent of any injury was confirmed. Tomorrow will show what impact his crash had on his power.

WHat does it mean, does it mean he fell on his knee and because of bruising it hurts, which can be overcome or does it mean he had more serious problems

Richie was busy fixing his bike. Not too concern about conceding time. His team mate is clearly around him

I can't see how you're figuring Aru is going to crack and lose minutes unless you're referring to the itt tomorrow. I accept Aru's statement that he neglected to eat enough considering his youth and inexperience. Also when has Contador cracked in a grand tour and lost minutes?

And Nieve, who is very similar in size to Porte, rode on finishing in the same time as Contador. Is Nieve riding for himself or what? Didn't stop on stage 10 when Porte punctured too. Don't renew his contract. No doubt Porte has had awful luck but the time damage could have been limited on both occasions. Dare I say he should have finished in the same time as Contador today and maybe lost 30 seconds if the puncture on stage 10 had been correctly handled. As it is, he's lost a combined time of 4 minutes 15 seconds to Contador from the two incidents.

Well, there is a very obvious answer there.

And that's me being sympathetic to Contador's fatigue in 2011 on Galibier.

where did you learn about Nieve's contract? That's good news, TS should snatch him.

btwl, the word from Viviani on Porte:

“The red jersey is the big focus after my stage win,” Viviani told Eurosport after the stage. “Richie lost more time today after the crash and it’s certainly not a lucky Giro d’Italia for him. Tomorrow we have a big time trial and then after the Madonna di Campiglio stage he can decide what he wants to do for the rest of the race.

he might as well just leave the Giro with brutal 3rd week...

Nieve is out of contract this year. Signed a two year deal when he joined last year.

:p

I remerber Rigo has won a Mountain stage in the Giro, he won the white jersey a year and with the best almost of the Giro in the hardest Giro ever raced, and was second in the overall the last 2 years.

Porte was impresive in his first Giro, but he has never again showed the potential to be in the podium. Rigo used to be the last domestique in the mountains for Wiggo or Froome when Porte and Henao were there as well.

I think Porte is very good he has a lot of important wins, but here has more to demostrate than Rigo in the big mountain stages.

First Giro for Porte and for Uran, Porte 2 years older:

http://www.cqranking.com/men/asp/gen/race.asp?raceid=17392

it is the ITT, but In the other mountins stages Uran was working for Arroyo, who was in pink, so it is difficult to evaluate, Porte was strong, just 5 minutes in the stage of Aprica.... most of the riders this year will lose more than 5 minutes, but Rigo can even win that stage.

Anyway I bet all this is stupid becouse Porte is likely to dont start tomorrow. :(

i agree contador is the least likely to have a bad day. he is a human being though (i think), even if he often seems infallible. it could happen. i doubt it will. also, he has been known to crash out.

my gut tells me aru is going to lose a large chunk of time tomorrow, and then quite a bit more next week. i think he will still podium.

no one talks about kreuziger. He might just sneak in to the podium. He has been riding smart. Not with the favorite but the second group.

All the riders have bad days, it is part of his capacity. But when another rider lose time is a bad day and when Contador lose time is a bad day as well, not just: he is the best but he had a bad day.

If he is better in shorter and hilly ITT as we can see when we compared with long, then in this long Uhe has never done so long) and semiflat ITT, the surprise is if he won or if he lose just a little. He can do it, of course, but it will be for me a very good day for him.

Well he could try to win a stage! How many GT stages has he won? Zero? So that would be an accomplishment.

DB might have other idea. Better save Porte for Froome at TDF. Sky is riding with Viviani in red jersey. That's a consolation price at least.

Well, while red jersey is better than nothing, we all know the sprinters jersey from Giro has almost no value. The best sprinters are not here and Giro is not known for sprinting stages.

That being said, Porte should stick with one week races as I don't think his positioning and race awareness is suited to super hectic grand tours. Maybe Vuelta ...

And I got a message for Ritche too:

"Hey Dwarf, this ain't no some Willunga Hill bs race, this is a real GT!"

Sky should hire an Italian guy solely to win il Giro. I'm thinking on Ricardo Ricco. With Brailsford and marginal gains, Ricco would conclude the 3 weeks with over 1 hour of distance within the second place.
