No chance for a GC result, of course. His lack of form this year and inconsistency even last year are just two factors.

Even if he was capable he would be put to the test too much and be used up as a dom, if only because of Contador and Tinkoff.

Nieve is the second best "GT specialist" on Sky's Tour team, anyway...

Nieve is a good rider. but he is yet to prove himself in a stage race, let alone a GT.
Porte is a proven winner of stage race.

Porte is among the most under-used riders. He ought to have been in this Giro, instead of Sky sending a C team to a GT. Without DB's bias tpwards froome, porte would have podiumed this tour.

And last year's Porte was much better than this year's Nieve. Porte might struggle more in the first week due to his interruptions this year but the sign's are, that he is improving. If Froome wins and Porte finishes nowhere what do Sky care, it's all about the win. Sky will give Porte another shot at the Giro next year where Quintana probably won't ride, which will increase his chances and Uran might do the Tour next year as well, so he will get another chance as team leader. Don't see them trying again with Wiggins if he is still in the team that is.

Healthwise Porte was not good enough for the Giro this year. That's the reason they did not send him. What's the point of sending him with poor health and no racing under his belt. They gave him more time to get in shape for the Tour.

I responded to a discussion about Porte's GC prospects in the upcoming Tour. Obviously Sky doesn't care, as long as Froome wins. Which probably won't happen now that Contador went full *** again, but anyway.

Porte was much better than Nieve on most days, yes. But more inconsistent. Point being he wasn't GT leader material last year. Even less so than Nieve, whose GT results so far at least show some consistency.

Paris - Nice means jack when the Tour and the Giro are concerned. Tony Martin won P-N, for fukc's sake. Other, harder, one-week stage races are more relevant, of course, but only up to a point. Even a Dauphine top-5 or a TdS win doesn't tell you that much, IMO.

lol, Porte has done an incredible domestique job about a dozen times in the last few years. He is without a doubt the #1 mountain superdom since he has been at Sky (probably excluding Froome 2011-12, and Kreuziger is closing). He is the second man picked every race of the year.

Well it goes without saying re Porte even though Nieve has stepped up this year but Porte was incredible in the Tour last year apart from one bad day where he lost big time which was not surprising with the amount of work he was doing. I remember a certain Mr Contador not being able to hold his wheel on a few mountain stages but Contador so far this year is looking much better than last year.

porte is inconsistent bcoz he hasnt been given a clear leadership role.
the day he gets that, he will start performing better.

You have to start small. He was given a clear leadership role in Tirreno and he flunked it. Being given the title of "leader" doesn't guarantee that you will do well. It might inspire you some, but you have to have the legs, health, and form to win....he has simply been lacking recently.

I thought he was this year? He flunked it. Maybe it was just coicidence that he got sick all the time or he was under pressure, he might pushed too hard in training, and he neglected his health? I don't know. But I thought he was giving a leadership this year for the Giro. He even got a different racing schedule that Froome?

Excellent effort by Richie to finish with the leaders in stage 2, especially after going through plenty of drama. A sure sign that his legs are the strongest they've been since the TDU.

This will still prove a tiring day for him. He is the guy in the lead group who's made the most efforts by far. This type of thing stays with you.

Now a question about him being able to step in into Froome's shoes is getting it's full sense.
Can't imagine a GT without Porte's bad day. The podium is already a toll order.

Not only that, but his team is weak. Porte himself was Froome's most important domestique in a rather thin looking team. Porte does not have another Porte.
