Gotta admit, I'm a little disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing Quintana kicking Porte's a$$ all over the mountains of Italy. :p

No, but seriously, too bad. A TTer like Porte vs. climbers like Nairo and Purito would have given us some good action.

I second you on that. Me too disappointed. But it's kinda foreseeable looking at how contador season has been unfolding. Sky needs all hands on deck. As strong as Froome is, he needs Porte to be his last man. Kreuziger is getting stronger so having Richie on Froome's side is important. I'm not sure how Richie felt about it. .. you got a chance to be GT leader, and now you go back being Froome B..itch :D:D

Their scared of everyone. They know Nairito and Purito would thrash Porte in the Giro, and Contador's looking capable of putting the hurt on Froome in the Tour. So their having Porte avoid his thrashing completely and throwing all their resources at making sure as minimal hurt is put on Froome as possible. That plan will be futile in the long run though. :D

I doubt it will be futile

Why send an under prepared rider to the Giro when they can try again next year. They had no choice. He has missed too much racing. A fully fit Porte would not be getting thrashed by anyone in the Giro and his support for Froome in last year's Tour shouldn't be underestimated. Whatever he lost in the mountains would be gained in the TT. Oh yes Sky is completely hopeless at everything. Too bad the record books say otherwise.

Oh, I'm just having a bit of fun at Sky's expense. ;)

Speaking seriously, I agree. It's the smart thing to send Porte to the Tour instead. If he's not ready for the Giro there's no point in suffering through 3 weeks and getting nothing in return.

And yes, it will be futile. Nibs, Contador, and others will see to it the Sky train is dismantled and their power meters rendered useless.

So, what do you all think what will Richie's Tour destiny be?
Can he step in into Froome's shoes in case of an accident, will the super domestique role enable him to achieve top 5 placing (although it hasn't happened last year), or something else?
Judging by the season so far, a notable GC placing isn't certain at all.

Porte and Nieve are funny choices for a mountain train. Unless they are going for a post-privatisation theme, where sometimes the train runs perfectly and sometimes it just doesn't show up and you end up hanging around Crewe station on your own, rummaging through the tiny selection of books in the WH Smiths.

Privatisation was the best thing to happen to British Rail. Doubled passenger numbers don't lie no matter how rose tinted your specs are.

Not here, sport. My fault for making the joke, I admit.

My father works on on the rails in the north west, and given how apparent it is that no ****er pays for a ticket there, I'm not surprised all the rolling stock has been sent down south where they can rob commuters blind and people dutifully buy tickets.

Crossed wires. I meant "not here" in this forum.

Privatisation has been a disaster, leading to the British rail system managing the impressive feat of combining some of the highest public subsidies in Europe with some of the highest fares in Europe. It was privatised as a series of local monopolies - combining all of the disadvantages of private and public services, while also removing the advantage in coordination a national entity provided.

But again, I'm provoking an argument where it isn't appropriate. So I'll let you have the last word and get back to taking the mickey out of Porte.

Now I'm ready to start.

Anyway, Porte is flakey, and I hope he shatters in to a million pieces when Froome needs him, then Dave can try to explain to his paymasters why he thought a Kenyan 2nd place was worth more than a British 13th.

Won't happen, but I would laugh.

I would laugh until my throat was raw. Unfortunately, Froome is I think just too good. It's entirely possible that Contador's stronger team can do him over on some stage or other and no doubt the forum will melt down if they do. But it won't matter. Froome will smash everyone in the TT and probably take time on most of the big mountain stages too.

I still think it's completely nuts to leave a top 3 TTer, top 15 cobbler, top 20 climber at home, mind you. He's not a leadership threat. He's not a threat in any way. Even if he acts up in some unexpected manner, he will still be more useful than Zandio. In fact, I'd cheerfully take an 8 man team with Wiggins instead of both Pate and Zandio and think I'd got a great deal.

Well you have to remember that he has been sick for a good portion of this year's season.
