Richie Porte - what do we know about him?

Page 111 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Sky Italia is a major sponsor, and they have to be kept happy.

The team has always put an Italian with ambitions for stage wins (usually breakaways) into their Giro squad.

So what balckcat said, just a little expanded

Oh, to be a fly on the wall when Froomie and Michelle found out that Richie got first crack at the special sleeping arrangements.

Let's remember The Prophecy of Brailsfraud: In the Brave New Clean Era we won't see these repeated attacks of the dirty past (explaining "boring" Wiggo win). Looks like with the marginal pillows and motorhomes this is possible even for Lil Rch as we've seen today.

I just watched the last 10k of the stage. Unbelievable. This is only the Giro!

Anybody else here suspects that Porte's decision to change sleeping arrangements has to do with the vehicle having been loaded with custom-fitted and hidden medical paraphernalia and the ability to store blood?

I have no proof but... it just dawned on me after watching an episode of Moonshiners and their bright idea of custom-fitting a motor home with a 500-pound storage tank where they can hide the moonshine from inquisitive types. Some small-time rappers are also known to have made it a practice to transport drugs between towns in motor homes or even buses.

It would definitely not surprise me.

It wouldn't surprise me either, although I doubt he would carry the gear along and take chances. But again, he could come up with the Impey excuse and blame the previous owner :D .

Think about it, you can store blood and all types of substances in a hidden compartment, away from any hidden cameras or microphones, and if the authorities show up unannounced, you push a button and all that's stored in the hidden compartments goes directly into the septic tank.

It's convenient: No one will ever have to make any special deliveries AND you can get a transfusion at any point during the afternoon/night.

The knowledge that there are some people out there who bought mein climb, read it and nodded in agreement when reading that passage, thinking that's why Froomy and Richie are so good honestly makes me furious.

That's probably what gave him the idea :D

I wonder if they have been keeping a hold on Porte's marginal gains the first half of the race?

It certainly seems to be a new approach to be more reactive in a GC bid...

Maybe the team and Porte is just no better right now...

I do have a suspicion though, that they will go full mantle in third week... Fulfulling the outlined prophecy of Kerrison that Porte is now a concistent GC rider...

What with all the obvious Astana 'performance' will Walsh be sent to Italy to interview Porte after the ITT, which i guess will put him in Pink, to ally any fears the Sky fan club will have........? ;)

Harder training, more pineapple juice than last few years, better sleeping, no nutella, no sun, rounder wheels, lost weight...............

...No more booze, more sex, Personal RV...

Doped or not, Richie rode smart today which is strange, just wonder can he press the boost button in the last week... Blood bags all round tonight in the RV!

Maybe I have missed something but I think Richie lacks the killer instinct. He has had plenty of opportunities to light it up this week and potentially put Bertie to the sword, but it seems he has to wait for Aru to attack till he does something. That said I fully I expect that he will be in full alien mode from Tuesday onwards.

He has done a couple of little attacks and personally, I have wondered wtf he bothered for. They were weak, ineffectual and looked half-hearted.

Much better, IMO, to save every scintilla of energy until week #3, and/or the TT.

i dont reckon Richie has the legs to win, even if different GC riders have different blood refills, Richie has beeen picking of the smaller races like Romandie and Nice, and even if he timed his build for July or the Festival of May, I dont think he is GT winner material.

And his chrono will be less effective than has been touted, the weightloss will be like Hroner who became a mediocre tt rider after Cali in about 2011 cos of the weightloss. Yes Richie won nationals and beat Rohan Dennis, but Richie will struggle for the podium this Giro imo.

Richie does not have the ability everyone gives him credit for. 2013 TdF was a high-water mark.

I agree with you people do give him a lot of credit....way too much in my opinion...

The way I see it all the drugs and blood bags in the world won't make you a winner if you don't have what it takes.

Sky have relied on riding every one into the ground with the million watts per hour tactic or sheer boredom take your pick. But that is not the team they have given Richie for this Giro.

Maybe I will be proven wrong who knows but I think Richie and Sky have peaked....and I really hope I am right, I'd be happy to see some others teams pull off some ridiculously alien performances for a while.

The guy has been ON FIRE since January. Which, is perfectly normal for a Sky rider.

He looks pretty good at the moment. He's got Contador and Aru attacking each other at every hilly stage. Things should get ridiculous between the top-3 at the upcoming ITT and MTF punishment the next day.

I'm looking forward to some breakout TT performances. The attacks the next day will be ridiculous!
