Miss World kind of speech.

Yeah, it was so bad, brought back memories of the infamous Miss Teen USA 2007 - South Carolina speech.
I have no words.
If someone wanted to write and direct that, I doubt he could. And actor would have a serious problem performing it.

I'll take Sagan's speech as a conceptual art... a performance.

And Libertine, your perfectly entitled to your opinions and not wanting Sagan to win. But just as a friendly tip, you may want to tone it down a bit.
I did say back when he first attacked that I would get banned if I was honest about my thoughts at that point. I stand by that, and I have been trying to watch my language after the initial outburst.

I don't like Sagan's personality one bit, but at least he's a rider of sufficient status to be world champ. So kinda like Hushovd. I can work with this.

This sums up my thoughts. I can't fault how Sagan performs on the bike for someone of his physical abilities. Today he played his cards 100% perfect and deserves total respect for that. But wearing the Rainbow jersey I just hope he behaves himself off the bike or else that will be cringe-worthy for everyone.
What on earth has he done in the past two seasons for anyone to think he isn't going to "behave himself"?

The podium incident was inexcusable, but that was 2 and a half years ago now. With hindsight it's pretty clear that he has grown up and is completely inoffensive these days.

Thank god there are rules on the jersey design. Can't imagine what ghastly creation either Cannondale or Tinkoff would have produced without them.

As I said, it's understandable that you feel bad with a Sagan win, but when you look at the guys who finished behind, you ought to thank him for it. It would be a disgraceful ending to have the wheelsuckers carousel winning the race. Sporting wise, Sagan totally deserved it. And at the end of the day, cycling wins.

I honestly don't get this hate for 'wheel suckers'.
Cycling isn't a sport about who can attack the most, it's a sport about who can win the most. Some does that by attacking, others do it by staying in the peloton and waiting for the sprint.
Others still do it by a bit of both.

Yet one has more merit than the other. Australia did absolutely nothing, they couldn't have done less, literally. They could, however, have attacked the race or even helped Germany chase (who in the end were undeservedly relegated out of the top ten, after Degenkolb tried to break away), having placed two guys among the best in the end. As for Valverde, for all the failed attempts he's had at gold now, should know that the only way he'll ever score big is to attack, because there will always be someone better than him. Same for Norway, who took pride in saying pre-race that they hoped it would come down to a sprint, when everybody knows Kristoff can be as succeceful by attacking. When one chooses the easy way, and someone else of the same characteristics actually does an effort to win, you ought to root for the latter.

Thank you for that then. :)

It was a great worlds race. Many attacks, always a hard pace, and Matthews getting 2nd behind a true attacker. It cannot get better.

I hate cycling. **** this sport. **** everything to do with this sport. **** that guy and anyone who likes him and defends him.

Why this breakdown? Exciting race with a deserving champion.
I would literally rather have watched a six hour group ride won by Simon Gerrans.

I respect you most of the time, but what the hell? He acts like a tool off the bike, sure, but what was wrong with Sagan's ride today? He could have waited just like Matthews Gerrans Kristoff etc and would have definitely been one of the favourites, but instead he attacked, which is clearly more entertaining. He doesn't hide in the wheels and did it all without a team today. Like it or not, he deserved to win today
I don't give a flying one how he rode and whether he deserved to win today. For the on-bike activities, he did deserve to win today.

But I would rather have had an undeserving victor of a horrible race raced horribly by horrible people than a good race won well by Peter Sagan. If he got away in a highly improbable group of himself, Gerrans, Leipheimer, Froome and Mick freaking Rogers, I'd still want him to come last. There is literally no active cyclist you can name who I wouldn't want to see beat Sagan.

Sounds like it's a good job I didn't watch the speech. I turned off when he sat up knowing he'd got it. The sport is dying to me in front of my eyes.

I understand and respect that you don't like Sagan and his personality. But that doesn't mean that the sport is dying because the way he acts. I mean, you can't say the way he cycles is a bad thing. He always wants to go full gas. This championship he doesn't have another choice that waiting, because he didn't had a team.

Great to see a super talented Sagan win and a very talented Matthews finish second.

I am chuckling about the term ' wheel sucking ' - Sagan won because for once he rode a patient race - Sagan was invisible until the last lap - Reckon he might have been wheel sucking - Froome only won the TDF because he wheel sucked on Porte on Alp D'Huez.

I know it's crazy. They may have bridged across had he worked and at least guaranteed a medal.

According to Dumoulin he attacked in the final kilometer and was away solo, but it was closed down again by the sprinters. Would have been a better 2nd place than Matthews :D

Well put. Pro cycling is not a charity. Be it the elite pros or road racing at any level if you don't have the strength and endurance to win off the front but a good sprint what are you supposed to do, let others "more deserving" win? Its part of the sport and I'm fine with it. Today's course was simply not hard enough to eliminate all the "wheel suckers" - Tyler Farrar's attack on the last lap made this obvious.

Have to wonder why Gerrans wasn't chasing either.
