Some years ago Kurt Asle Arvesen was referred to as Kurt Asfalt Gravesen in the Danish press. (Translates roughly to "Asphalt Digger", something about him crashing a lot...)

Btw... that guy who was called the Cash Register well... the first few times I read that as Crash Register...

Might be... I don't remember it that well... just thought it was kinda funny... :p

Somehow "skrabesen" (scraper) sounds more likely... after all; I don't think I've ever heard of a rider being digged into the ground...

What is Cadel's nickname? And not the one the media has graced him with (Cuddles).

"Lance"

when he was the new kid on the block dominating mountain bike at the same time Armstrong was dominating the worlds at such a young age...

Paolo Bettini - Il Grillo (that's Italian for cricket).
Marco Pantani - Il Pirata (little(?) Pirate); also Il Pirato (Pirate).
Ludo Dierckxsens - het Beest (the Beast).
Mario Cipollini - Supermario, Il Re Leone (the Lion King), Cipo.

These are a couple off the top of my head.

Dave

Pantani was also known as Elephantino and Dumbo (which he did not like) until aquiring Il Pirato which he preferred. Of course, Lance nicknamed him "Little S#it Starter" in the 2000 tdf :)

Supposedly Greg Lemond was called "Jack": Lemond=lemon=Jack Lemon (the actor)=Jack (according to Bob Roll anyway).

Some other US rider nicknames:

Jonathon "Jock" Boyer
Ron "Wookie" Kiefel
Jim "Och" Ochowicz
Thomas "Frischy" Frischknecht
Ned "The Lung" Overend (also "Deadly Nedly")
Greg "H-Ball" Herbold
The one and only Bob "Bobke" Roll (I know he isn't very popular here for humping Lance's leg any chance he gets, but other than that he's ok in my book.)

One of my own making:
I used to refer to Alex Zulle as "The Bat". I swear that guy couldn't see his handlebars from his saddle :p.

This Giro I've started calling Nibali "Nibbles". Was hoping he'd be stronger than Basso so we could have had a "Nibbles Vs Cuddles" battle.

Bradley Wiggins: Wigans
Mark Cavendish: Frodo, Chavendish
Levi Leipheimer: Bottle, Leepy
Graeme Brown: de Bruijn, Kamikaze

Why do you guys call Leipheimer 'Bottle?' Because he is small and has no hair like bottle, no?

I have become fond of the "Poison Dwarf" tag that somebody here bestowed upon Levi, but I call him Mini-me....I think I am not the only one.

where exactly does "cuddles" come from for Evans?

listening to italian commentary for the Giro they seem to pronounce his name as "cuddle" evans, and wondering if that's where this comes from...

As far as I understand it started during the 2008 where Evans was a little... angry... sometimes. As in anything but cuddley! Some commentator thought that was funny and decided to name him Cuddles! :D

The Schlecks have many nicknames but what should be the official one? Elder and younger? Elder and junior?

Also Michele Scarponi. "Zapatero"?

I don't think Philippe Gilbert has a nickname yet. Unless you coun't Phil as a nickname.

Perhaps Big Phil =D

Contador- El Dynamitero. If it wasn't for his victory salute lol.

I think Boonen needs a new nickname as well. Perhaps something new will come out of the box when he wins another RVV and P-R.
