Also can we just focus on Viviani being the best paid pure sprinter?
I already mentioned this in the Pinot thread where we were discussing this, but he and Gaviria being the only bunch sprinters on this list just shows the true value of QS to a sprinter. No WT wins between them since 2019.

If everyone was up for a new contract right this second, who would get the most money?
I assume nobody would go for anyone other than Pog, Rog, Van Aert, Van der Poel or maybe Ala?
Its daft comparing what they are on now, when some of them signed their contracts 2 or 3 years ago.

That's kind of a thing I'm curious about; which riders on that list are on new(ish) contracts, and which are on old(ish) contracts?
Froome's is obviously new.

Well, some consider buying a complete team because they are interested in just 1 rider. And he is not even in your list...
Who? Evenepoel? If so I wouldn't pay anything until he has completed some races. And the question was 'right this second'.

I bet if we looked at the palmares for all of them from the year before their current contract, we would say most are about right. Except for Froome obviously.

Kwiatkowski seems hugely overpriced there but then maybe that is what he demanded in order to sacrifice his own leadership opportunities and Ineos have deep enough pockets not to baulk at paying up.

Froome's is obviously new.

Valverde's was signed in 2019 so 2020 was the first year on his current contract.
Quintana's and Carapaz's were new for 2020.
Bernal's, if I remember correctly was signed after he won the Tour.
I think 2020 was Alaphilippe's first year on his current contract.

I can't believe that list is somewhat correct.

Sagan and Froome are hilarious.
Kwiatkowski the 6th best paid for getting 3rd in Poland and a Tour stage.

Nibali on 2.1 million for what ??? Fuglsang?

Before seeing the names on the list, I wrote down 20 names of who I thought would be on it. Only 2 mistakes, as I had Almeida and Simon Yates instead of Viviani and Bardet.

Almeida was a bit of a long shot but I thought UAE must have more than one rider there, but apparently not (Edit: and if I could count, there are indeed 2 with Gaviria in 20th, but I saw his name before beginning the exercise).

I'm surprised at Nibali, given Astana apparently doesn't even have the money to pay wages regularly.

I don't trust this list...

I have a hard time believing Total can offer 5.5 million to any rider, let alone want to do so to a washed-up Sagan. Similar for a broke Astana and an ancient Nibali.

I can't see Evenepoel not being in the top-20 at this point.

I would be surprised if Ineos is paying six of the twenty highest salaries, including three of the top-6 and a re-signed Viviani, without making a move for better riders.

I would be shocked if Roglic, Van Aert and Van der Poel aren't among the very best-paid cyclists at this point, although they might be if bonuses and private sponsorships are factored in.
