Unfortunately the most likely scenario is that Urán, being a lot closer in the GC and riding for Sky, would have saved himself instead of attacking with 8 km to go :p

but with henao and uran not having lost that pointless time, one of them would've attacked at least :)

uran and henao stand on their own. btw read this:

"I'll have to speak to Rigoberto tonight. He went all out for the stage. It's just whether he feels now he can go for that GC. There's a time trial. He's quite inconsistent like that; he can have a really good day, win a stage like today and then lose a few seconds tomorrow, so we'll have to see how he feels."

pathetic is not even the word to describe what wiggins says here about uran.

Sounds like Wiggins is struggling a little with the fact that Sky should shift focus now and he should work for Uran from here on out.

This. Uran only attacked in a failed attempt to isolate and fatigue Nibali, if he'd been closer in GC then he'd have sat on.

Yes, Uran's stage 10 attack failed in that respect

But the time he gained means that if he tries it again, Astana will be forced to chase.

Evans's one-man-band can't do it.

Looks like a reasonable team strategy to me.

The one fly in Sky's ointment is that VF-SI are now Astana's (or Nibali's) back-up team.

This is why the whole Wiggins fiasco sucks:

"Had Team Sky not sacrificed Urán in the lost cause of Wiggins on that wet descent to Pescara, the 26-year-old would be sitting in a prime position to challenge for the race as it heads into its mountainous second half. He may still challenge for the final Maglia Rosa, but his job has been made all the more difficult."

They wouldn't have let him go up the road at Monstasio is he was 1:36 closer, he was what, 2:50 behind then? So he would have been about 30/40s closer, not 1:36.

So @ c. 1:30, not @ 0:30s

Regardless of Wiggins getting sick that day, pulling Uran (and Henao) back that day was baffling. For a team that prides themselves on attention to detail, they still don't seem to twig that putting all your eggs in one basket is not a good idea. 2011 Tour - Wiggins crashes, whole team waits - GC is done. 2011 Vuelta - Froome let off the leash too late. Even the 2012 Tour when Froome flatted on that early stage they only sent one guy back to him and he lost over a minute.

It's one thing to have the whole team wait when you've only got one potential GC guy. But coming to a race with this strong a team, and then screwing everyone's GC on stage 3 is just dumb. Now 3rd is the best Uran can get IMO.

While this is true - and I completely agree that it was a silly decision to have Uran wait for Wiggins - it must be remembered that Uran wouldn't have been allowed to take 31 seconds (plus 20 bonus) on stage 10 had he been this close to the maglia rosa.

Edit: I now see that the same argument was made in the article. Oh well.

Yes, true but at least his fate would've been in his own hands and not in the hands of an ego maniac.

He gained 31 + 20 bonus, so if he hadn't gone back for Wiggins and if he hadn't been allowed to go in the break he'd be 45" closer and at 1:19 right now, but that's also assuming he wouldn't have picked up any of the bonus seconds on that stage, which he very well might have. I'm also not completely convinced they wouldn't have allowed him up the road had he been at 1:13.

Ow my Uran. He just landed a jackpot (no disrespect to wiggins). He is rumoured to leave sky end of this year. Came to Giro as a gregario. Now he is in a driving seat to win or at least podium. If Uran sign with sky, next year, it's Lil' richie turns to throw temper tantrum for GT Leadership :D:D De javu, de javu.

Should Uran leave or should Uran stay? Most people say he should leave. Half heartedly I say he should stay. Winning GT with a strong and best training method with sky, makes it a little easy (but not necessary easy, just a lot better chance). Kerrison said that sky is the only team who provides one on one coach to rider ratio. And he was surprised that most team let their rider to their own device when it comes to training. If Uran wants to leave he'd better have taken good note for all his apprentice year at sky. Not just how and what is in his training menu but also how he can impact the new team mate with his new knowledge. Other wise, he'll be stuck with contender title only.

Money can be a motivation, but no glory?

Not necessarily true, possibly but at the same time they still believed that Wiggins was the threat and they may have allowed him to go up the road knowing that Sky's real GC threat was behind still.

No way that Wiggins and Froome will be both continue to ride for Sky after this season, so thats already one captain less. If Urans gets on the podium, they will give him another shot at a gc next year, probably Giro for Porte and Vuelta for Uran. If he wants to go for the TDF, he has to leave obviously.

Well, a bit late but nonetheless Is a good opportunity for him to "at least secure podium".....
Henao will be 200% backing him up, which makes it more beneficial for him in the upcoming mountain stages where they can ride alongside, not depending entirely of the "train" :)

Say Uran wins this Giro. He still probably wouldn't get a leaders role in a GT for Sky in 2014. And aside from that, he wants to do the Tour.

He's leaving.

I've just rewatched the end of that stage and I'm certain Astana and Evans expended all the energy they had to rein in Uran. Agnoli I think was Nibali's last man and he burnt himself leading Nibali up after Uran attacked, when he peeled off Nibali and Evans were actually working together to rein Uran in and put time into Wiggins who had dropped back.

So I'm certain Uran would have retained most of the 51 seconds he won on that stage if he hadn't lost time going back for Wiggins.

nope. wiggins and froome already signed with sky for next season. Porte as well. Henao and Uran hasn't signed anything yet.

wiggins might attempt tour/vuelta double. Porte for Giro next year? maybe Froome wants to do Giro/Tour double, if he can win the TDF this year. And Uran will want another GT left in he calendar. Lil's richie will start throwing a temper tantrum. And all year we'll see uran and lil' Richie competing for GT leadership.

Are you sure about Wiggins? He signed a four year deal with Sky in 2010 that was due to expire at the end of this season.

Hm, you are right. It was Froome that has signed until 2014. Even if Wiggins hasn't signed with sky, do you think that Wiggins will sign with other team? I don't think so. He needs his coaches and sky training regime fits him. Besides, he knows that he got a strong team to carry him around the mountain. He would be no body if he goes to other team.
