I think if Bolt really wants to be called the greatest Olympian he should try the 400 meters or long jump in Tokyo. Or am I crazy for thinking that?

I actually think you're right. His coaches wanted him to specialise in 400m by 2008, but he's never liked the distance. It's very hard to see him doing well, with van Niekerk, Merritt, and James looking to dominate the event for a pretty long time. I'm guessing he couldn't do hurdles...?

I'd prefer to see him doing the long jump as that was my best number as well. :p

The pole vault was brilliant.

Da Silva with gold. A turn up for the books.

Pathetic Brazilian fans.

The rest belongs to the clinic, wouldn't be surprised if we get the real result in 8 years time.

The booing before that final attempt was terrible.

Surprised as yourself.

The Dutch are so bad this year in stuff were we normally get medals and atheletes that always get hyped. But then it's like all the athletes you like never hear from are suddenly grabbing golds everywhere. Some guy I never heard of took gold in the 10km swimming in open water. Our 7th gold, already better than London

Wow the Netherlands are burning it up.

Did notice that the gymnastics ladies had a good reward last night.

This not in reply to your post - I truly can't stand the Olympics anymore, not sure if it is because I'm PED jaded or that the format it is feed to me here in Merikah - maybe both.

In Austria the situation is also a little bit like that. The athletes we expect to win medals always disappoint. The big difference is that the athletes nobody knows also don't win anything and the last medal for Austria in summer olympics is from 8 years ago. The last gold medal 12 years :(

So happy for Thiago. Wow. Almost cried.

The booing was minimal. Unsportsmanlike but doubt it had much influence in the outcome.

Yey, Thiago!
Except that the other athletes complained about the booing.
It's uncivilized and against the Olympic spirit - but who cares about that, right? Nationalism ftw.

That's not what I said. I only heard booing towards Lavillenie before he started the run. My bad, if it happened earlier to others, I just didn't hear it. Like I said, unsportsmanlike...

Well... there were some days when I thought the goal of reaching 10 medals was kinda hard, but then "we*" got at least one medal every days since the 11th, and now the goal has techically been reached.

(Only 9 awarded so far, but what the women's double going into the final... which will be played on the 18th so, I dunno who's gonna take a medal tomorrow.)

*By "we" I of course mean Danish athletes, which I am not.

Another fun fact... The grandson of Eddy Merckx will play in the finale of the hockey tournament... On the Argentinian side...

Hoping to see Ivana Spanovic continue her good form this season with (at least) a medal in the long jump. I think she's got as good a shot as anyone to win gold, but we'll see.

Another Serb won the gold in the men's 66 kg Greco-Roman Wrestling earlier in the day. The first medal won by Serbia at these games. Even though he had a tough first round draw, many still felt that Djokovic would win in Rio, certainly get a medal of some color. After he lost in the first round to Del Potro, the rest of the federation followed suit with under performances, but now the team sports (women's basketball and women's volleyball are both in the semis, men's water polo team is in the semis, men's basketball plays the Croatian team in the quarters-bummer for them to meet so early...). They could still win medals, gold even, until the end of the games.

I'd love to see the Montenegro men win a medal in the water polo as well. A lot was expected from the women's handball team, but they were poor. I think they lost every match in Rio, which is a shocker, considering they won the Euros in 2012, beating the same Norwegian team that beat them earlier that summer in the London gold medal game.

The Croats are having a solid games. Three golds and one that was literally a centimeter from gold, and a few more good chances of medals in the next couple days. It sucks that they are meeting the Serbs in the quarters in basketball, but what can you do. Just hope there are no incidents. Sandra Perkovic in the discus. Wow. Defended her gold from London in style.

Disappointing result form Amel Tuka in the men's 800m. I honestly though he was going to get a medal. I think he is one of the few guys that can challenge and beat Rudisha, but he didn't make it out of the semi, which is most unusual for him. He employs the Dave Wottle/Yury Borzakovsky tactic where he starts slow, at the back of the pack for the first lap and then essentially runs even splits to pick runners off in the closing stages. Perhaps that didn't work out as well in Rio. I missed those semis heats, so not sure if it was tactics or simply wasn't good enough.

Slovenians are doing rather well. Three (if I am not mistaken) medals and seemingly more to come. Their handball team is looking dangerous.

As you guys can tell, I am cheering for the former Yugoslav countries. One can always speculate as to how strong the Olympic team (individual sports AND team sports, all across the board) would have been had the country stayed together.

Riot police called as Iran slam Olympics ‘conspiracy’
Iranian super heavyweight and favourite Behdad Salimikordasiabi crashed out of the men’s +105kg class after judges ruled he had failed to register a total in the clean and jerk.

Defending champion Salimikordasiabi, known as “Salimi”, and his coach angrily remonstrated with officials for several minutes in the arena before the contest was finished as boisterous Iranian fans booed incessantly.

“There’s a conspiracy. Our enemies were on the jury,” said irate Iranian coach Sajjad Anoushiravani, appearing to be referring to a judge from Iraq.

“It’s obvious they took the medal from Salimi. The jury was selected for this to happen.

Judges ruled that the 26-year-old super heavyweight’s first jerk was a no lift. The jury then dramatically over-ruled the judges’ decision that his second lift had been legitimate.

Local fans really letting themselves down at these games with the booing, when will they realise it isn't a football match and they should at least respect the athletes? Another night of really poor attendances too, these games may finish with a lot more negatives than positives.
