Hoping to see Ivana Spanovic continue her good form this season with (at least) a medal in the long jump. I think she's got as good a shot as anyone to win gold, but we'll see.
Another Serb won the gold in the men's 66 kg Greco-Roman Wrestling earlier in the day. The first medal won by Serbia at these games. Even though he had a tough first round draw, many still felt that Djokovic would win in Rio, certainly get a medal of some color. After he lost in the first round to Del Potro, the rest of the federation followed suit with under performances, but now the team sports (women's basketball and women's volleyball are both in the semis, men's water polo team is in the semis, men's basketball plays the Croatian team in the quarters-bummer for them to meet so early...). They could still win medals, gold even, until the end of the games.
I'd love to see the Montenegro men win a medal in the water polo as well. A lot was expected from the women's handball team, but they were poor. I think they lost every match in Rio, which is a shocker, considering they won the Euros in 2012, beating the same Norwegian team that beat them earlier that summer in the London gold medal game.
The Croats are having a solid games. Three golds and one that was literally a centimeter from gold, and a few more good chances of medals in the next couple days. It sucks that they are meeting the Serbs in the quarters in basketball, but what can you do. Just hope there are no incidents. Sandra Perkovic in the discus. Wow. Defended her gold from London in style.
Disappointing result form Amel Tuka in the men's 800m. I honestly though he was going to get a medal. I think he is one of the few guys that can challenge and beat Rudisha, but he didn't make it out of the semi, which is most unusual for him. He employs the Dave Wottle/Yury Borzakovsky tactic where he starts slow, at the back of the pack for the first lap and then essentially runs even splits to pick runners off in the closing stages. Perhaps that didn't work out as well in Rio. I missed those semis heats, so not sure if it was tactics or simply wasn't good enough.
Slovenians are doing rather well. Three (if I am not mistaken) medals and seemingly more to come. Their handball team is looking dangerous.
As you guys can tell, I am cheering for the former Yugoslav countries. One can always speculate as to how strong the Olympic team (individual sports AND team sports, all across the board) would have been had the country stayed together.
