Ashton Eaton wins the Decathlon and is the first repeat winner since 1984! Thomas van der Plaetsen is 8th, very good performance by him.

By the way, can someone explain this discrepancy to me?

Ashton Eaton - double Olympic Champion, double World Champion and triple Indoor World Champion - only has 75K followers on twitter.

https://twitter.com/AshtonJEaton

Meanwhile Jessica Ennis-Hill has a whooping 1.56M followers on twitter. If you don't know who she is, she's the 2012 Olympic Heptathlon Champion, double World Champion and also has one Indoor World Championship title. She's an amazing athlete of course, but Ashton Eaton is miles above her... He's also the World record holder for the Decathlon and Heptathlon. He also holds the Olympic Record...

Does Ashton Eaton stand out less because the USA have so many Olympic Champions? Do the British people simply care more about their sport heroes? Or do they care more about the Decathlon/Heptathlon than the Americans? Quite puzzling to me. An athlete like Ashton Eaton deserves a lot more recognition if you ask me.

Jess Ennis-Hill was the poster girl of the London games, even those who don't really follow athletics know who she is as the Olympics are such a big deal to the majority of the British public. She was also 2nd in the sports personality of the year in 2012, losing to only Wiggins which was no real surprise that year.

So the answer is because she's talented and a pretty woman? :p

Because the Olympics are also a big deal to Americans of course. Anyway, great to see at least one Heptathlon athlete is getting the recognition she deserves.

Yes I suppose good looks can never hurt your popularity when your in the limelight. It's not suprising she has so many followers though, as you say she gets the recognition she deserves, no idea why Eaton's follower count is so poor given the Americans love of the Olympics.

Anybody have a ranking of track & field athletes with the most Olympic medals?

Found this on wiki, its got all sports but you can see which athletes were from athletics.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiple_Olympic_gold_medalists

So Bolt not quite the greatest he claims he is. Carl Lewis remains the best. I'm not going to count Paavo Nurmi as it happened almost 100 years ago and a lot of the events he won medals in seem kind of redundant or even unfair...

Thanks btw.

Its because UK hosted the games and made it out to be something ginormous. Don't tell me "the us also care about the Olympics" because the 2012 games were billed as the saving of a nation. Polls showed that the UK average life expectancy and happiness ratings increased purely as a result of "the games" which would "inspire a nation" whatever that means.
Ennis was chosen as one of the ambassadors thereby giving her more publicity

Ugly indeed. It looks like Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have now both told officials there was no robbery, and they were drunk. Jimmy Feigen has paid $11,000 to charity to have it go away, which is apparently an option of Brazilian law when dealing with some non-violent, misdemeanor-like crimes. This entire charade makes my entire country look bad.

That second article on Ryan Lochte and his ego really is spot on. If he were smart, he'd give an apologetic statement asap, saying they were drunk and foolish and regrets his actions and statements, and is willing to pay any restitution. He's the biggest fish here (no pun intended) and it's only going to get worse here if he doesn't.

He should do the only thing that is the right move at this time. GO BACK to BRASIL and Make a public apology then pay or do what is asked of him and what is required by their law.
Sitting in the USA does him no favors and makes the US TEAM look bad.

No questions just go back to Rio and face the consequences, that is not being a man or anything like that. It is owning up to your wrong.

He should. But instead he'll probably do something like go on Lance's podcast and talk about how mistreated he was.

It would serve him right if the teammates took Lochte out for a "party," drugged him, stuck him on a plane, and dumped his just-coming-to, semi-conscious body at the doorstep of the Rio police station anonymously.

He already has issued an apology for his behavior. He’s being criticized for not apologizing for lying, when in fact the authorities have confirmed that the guard did draw a gun and demand money. So he did embellish the story, but it wasn’t exactly made up of whole cloth, either. As his lawyer said,

“A gun was pointed at the swimmers and they were forced to get out of their cab and give up their money. No matter what happened at that gas station, the swimmers were robbed by people with a gun appearing to be law enforcement. No matter what country you are in that is robbery and robbery is a crime.”

Yes, they shouldn’t have trashed the door or whatever they did, but the Brazilian police themselves have said that what the swimmers did was not a crime. Having a gun pointed at you is pretty scary regardless of what you did to precipitate the event. I think people are forgetting that the main reason this is big news is because Brazil is extremely insecure about its (well-deserved) reputation for being unsafe. If this had happened in New York, involving someone not particularly well-known, no one would pay much attention. Indeed, as Lochte's lawyer's statement indicates, if it had happened in the U.S., the person claiming robbery would have had a good case if the police had tried to charge him with making a false report.

I don’t think Brazil wants to see him again, and since they have let the others return to the U.S., the authorities have clearly moved on. Brazil doesn't care about restitution or paying damages (which are far less than $11,000, come on), Brazil cares about its image for tourists. The Lochte incident did immense damage in that respect, but having the facts of the story come out have helped the country repair that image (to the extent that it can be repaired; there have been so many other apparently true stories of tourists being attacked that one could regard the Lochte incident as a drop in the bucket).

Which teammates? The ones who were with him that night, who had every opportunity to tell the media that the story wasn’t true, and didn’t until they were pulled off the plane and hauled to the police station?

Let's also not forget that this story never would have emerged if Lochte's mother had kept her mouth shut. Yes, Lochte shouldn't have told her the story, but he clearly wasn't seeking media attention, as some of his detractors have implied. It was thrust on him after his mother spoke to the media. He shouldn't have given that beach interview, that was a huge mistake, but at least he didn't go seeking a reporter to tell the story to.

I don't think Lochte is much like LA in is character. He just does some dumb things. We know that Phelps is no choirboy, either. Really, drunk driving is a lot more dangerous, and ought to be a lot less forgivable, than falsifying some details of an encounter with an armed man.

Really annoyed by the women's hockey final. I'm usually annoyed by hockey because penalty corners are disproportionally important, but with no extra time and stuff, shootouts have even more disproportionate effect on hockey

Yeah, that sport is ridiculous when a team can win by only focusing on penalty corners. Argentina won that way in the men's finale as well.

Gutted that we lost that final against Germany. Germany played a dangerous game playing slow center backs so far up the pitch, but we failed to capitalize despite several chances. Deserved winner of the final in the end, and we should be delighted with the silver.

Yeah, that sport is ridiculous because Belgium lost in the mens final.

FTFY both. ;)

Nah, it's a dumb sport to watch, I would also say that if we won the Gold. I only care about cycling and athletics. There's plenty of non-Belgium athletes I cheer for like Ashton Eaton and Renaud Lavillenie.

Belgium just made the 4 x 400M finals. For such a small country, with no real sprinter's background, it's amazing we keep making the finals lol. Granted, 3 of the 4 athletes on the team are brothers lol.

edit:

Trinigad and Tobago and Great Britain disqualified for the 4 x 400M relay race?!

Yeah, it would have been nice to see Sweden win the title after beating the often favored Americans in the quarters. Germany kind of stuttered and sputtered in the opening games, and while they did get better, it wasn't a big improvement, but that's how German football is. Both the men and women don't always start great, but they always find themselves in the latter stages of tournaments. I know that the men's field, mostly represented by U23 and U21 players, isn't as deep, but Germans are in the final against Brazil. I'll be cheering for the home team. I rarely cheer for Brazil in football, but it would be nice for the hosts to win the event they all wanted to win at the Olympics. It may also help with the overall mood of the games, which has been rather lackluster, and when it has seen some 'excitement' it was usually due to some controversy, booing, etc.

So the only damage done was Lochte pulled down a metal sign. The guards did draw a gun, and Lochte did initially resist. The guards demanded money before allowing the swimmers to leave.

Considering that he was under the influence at the time, I’d say Lochte’s account of the events was fairly accurate. It sounds as though he was recounting the events as he remembered them, not embellishing them to make him sound good, let alone as some excuse for why they were late, if they even were late. Again, if this happened in the U.S., the victims could file a report of robbery, and very unlikely they would be charged with making a false report.

Surprised no mention that if DeGrasse had run his semi time in the finals of the 200, it would have been a photo finish. Or maybe he would have pushed Bolt do go faster. I guess DeGrasse looks greener on the far side of the curve.
