Maybe if paying viewer is not capable of understanding foreign names, he should not be following international sports… it’s clearly too complicated for “the paying viewer”.

Replies on here show how little was understood and calling the poster a Brexiter and mocking them is doing everything some are pointing the finger at in the OP but in the opposite direction

Here's the thing you can pronounce names correctly without going overboard in the delivery
You can say Vincenzo Niabli correctly without saying V-I-N-C-E-N-Z-O N-I-B-A-L-I in an over the top way at every turn .

Just like I can say "The computer says no " in English correctly without saying it like David Walliams in Little Britain

Rob Hatch is not easy to follow for some people not because of his pronunciation (although he gets names wrong as other have stated . So is he really doing loads of homework to get it right or he just pronouncing names correctly for the languages he speaks ?. ) . Its his delivery .

Sure it is better to pronounce peoples names correctly but Hatch exaggerated names , changes his voice , sounds unnatural half the time and its nothing to do with pronunciation. There are other commentators pronouncing names correctly (though not all ) and I prefer everyone of them to Hatch

It hard for some people to follow him . He doesnt flow , he e grates. . This is the view of many people . Trying to make out anyone who has a problem as some sort of lesser European with Brexit views is ridiculous and is just trying to belittle people who dont agree with you

I have listened to Spanish and French commentators and no problem with languages . Just listening to a Spanish rider at present being interviewed in English and her pronunciation and language is easy to follow

Well, the threads are easy to miss when people always use fancy foreign words like "Giro d'Italia." I mean, a giro is just pita bread stuffed with meat. So why not call the race "Italian Sandwich" and be done with it?

Why do you feel the need to accentuate so often that many people have a problem with it? It makes me think you don't have any proof of that and that it's just your own opinion.

I get what you mean and agree that Rob Hatch gets theatrical with names often.

But I read the OP again and still think it implies that it prefers names to be pronounced not in its original rule. The subsequent posts only strengthen the implication.

I'm assuming the bold part is directed at me but I'm not entirely sure. I never called the poster a Brexiter nor did I imply it. In fact, the poster called other posters Europhiles first, after they have been quite patient with him.

And my reply is in fact a bit aggressive, but still not nearly as offensive as the original posts are. They are still there to read, I quoted most of them. It's insulting to so many European nations it's unbelievable . Pronouncing French last name correctly or attempting doing so is "garbled gobbledegook" now? Hatch may try too hard but I'll tell you something - as a Slovenian who speaks a bit Italian, he definitely comes the closest of them all on Eurosport/GCN when pronouncing these names...

But don't take my word for it. The proof that many are offended is this unusually long thread...

While having zero opinion or care if the commentators pronouce the names properly it does me amuse me slighty off topic that I have to forgiving of someone who has lived in Australia for 20 years but barely knows two sentences but I come across as ignorant in Europe if I can't pronounce a town correctly.

Actually I think in most countries you try to pronounce names close to the original. It's mostly the Anglo-Saxon countries where this is not as common.

Could be I just understand them better, because their way of mispronounciation is closer to mine than the English one.
Actually there are some small, but major differences between English pronounciation on one side and many languages like Spanish, Italian, French, German on the other one - especially "a" and "e", so that a name sounds very different to me quickly, although there haven't been many changes (like Valverde).

But in general the French don't have a big affinity to other languages, yes...

OP seemed rather offended by the fact that Rob Hatch actually makes an effort to try an pronounce names - whether people or places - in the correct way, rather than try to Anglify them, because he (OP, not Hatch) apparently can't understand them if they're pronounced "non-Englishly".

I don't really know where to start with this, he pronounced Fribourg correctly? I would find it patronising for a commentator to dumb down their pronunciation when they are facing a global audience. Especially as if there is a new and particularly difficult or strange word or name they normally spend time explaining it.

I'm an English speaker also and think it's completely normal to aim for as close to the accurate pronounciation as is possible. Indeed we don't do this with our own place names that we cannot intuit the spelling from the pronunciation easily. It would drive me up the wall if - for instance - a commentator pronounced Gloucester as Glue-chester or Leicester as Lie-chester.

Indeed, how far must this go? Should the end city of Paris-Nice be pronounced as 'Nais'? Is the Tom Simpson memorial on Mont Ven-tooks? Are there 21 hairpins on Alpay D Hooez?
