We just don't all hype them beyond believe here.
The guy has barely gotten a single CQ point the last three years. Last year he was never inside the top 10 in any race except national championships. And you say it's not a surprise...El Pistolero said:Yeah, so surprising to see the Belgian U23 time trial champ win this small race![]()

El Pistolero said:In his first year in the U-23 ranks, Vermote came up with a huge win in the time trial in the Le Tryptique des Monts et Chateaux over multiple strong time trialists in Jan Bakelants and Jan Ghyselinck.
In his 2nd year in the U23 ranks, Vermote kept pulling very strong results. He shocked the field in the U-23 Belgian Time Trial Championships with beating defending champion Ghyselinck (who finished in 4th) and won by 23 seconds. He had another strong time trialing result with winning the stage 2 time trial in the Tour du Haut Anjou beating U-23 stalwarts Tejay Van Garderen and Marcel Kittel. He hung on for 2nd place overall in the stage race just 4 seconds behind van Garderen.
2010 was a solid year for Vermote though in some peoples eyes, not as strong as his previous U-23 years. He had multiple strong results in big U-23 races such as the U-23 Ronde van Vlaanderen (12th), La Cote de Picardie (4th) and Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux (7th overall) though he had one great win in Brussel-Opwijk, breaking away solo and winning alone. Vermote signed with Quick Step for one year + a 1 year option in the late summer of 2010.

I'm sure that, although El Pistolero doesn't like to hype Belgian cyclists "because they don't do that" in Belgium, secretly he had Julien Vermote down as one of the top favourites for this race, because he beat Ghyselinck and Bakelants once as an espoir. Oh, and even Van Garderen and Kittel.Kazistuta said:These results doesn't strike me as more than decent U23 success. Comparing his TT skills with guys like Ghyselinck and Bakelandts isn't exactly a high marker to go by either.
Considering that Vermote won just in front of guys like Bauer, Ignatiev and Ladagnous says it all - but kudos to him, this was a great win for the young Belgian. Surprising win out of the blue? Yes indeed.
The most surprising thing this weekend to me was Fuglsangs poor time trial - I had him down as a potential overall winner after his display of form in Le Samyn.

Looks like Henao enjoyed his first race in Belgium....

Ghyselinck was a very big talent in the U23 ranks anyway, shows how much you know I guess. Not a whole lot.
Fuglsang peaking for the Ronde van West Vlaanderen after he busted his knee in the Tour Down Under. My god, do you know anything about cycling? He's clearly aiming for the Ardennes classics.
