This is what I mean about the concerted media attempt to portray him as the good guy. The guy gives up a seat in a car for a short ride, and it's made out like it's some heroic act of selflessness.
Clearly you don't understand "shotgun" protocol in the US. My kids would put relinquishment of shotgun rights up there with the greatest sacrifices one could make.

So, do you guys who were braying about how the "strongest must win" and "no gifts" and "Sepp wouldn't want to win a GT with an asterisk" [paraphrasing] now regard Kuss as debased for having accepted Roglic and Vingegaard not attacking him on the final climb today (and JV actually easing up to intentionally double Kuss's GC-lead to 2nd)?

Very curious to hear what you think! Please be honest.

Sepp Kuss is now the Laporte of GT winners. I wonder if, like Laporte, this has secured his future at Jumbo for the coming years. Otherwise what's the point of giving him a GT win.

If Laporte is any precedent to go by, gifting stuff in cycling sometimes doesn't work out the way people imagine (i.e. which in 'normal' cases is the rider receiving a gift then devotes himself to the rider giving the gift in future races). I mean I could be way off with this but isn't WvA still waiting for Laporte to return the favor? Maybe I'm cynical & I'm only remembering selective cases but what usually happens is the rider who gets the gift will subsequently benefit from a new standing resulting from that victory, i.e. a standing which makes him above filthy domestique work.

Then there's other examples where riders just straight-up get screwed by the Gods of cycling, i.e. like Richard Carapaz who gifted a TdF stage to Michal Kwiatkowski in the 2020 TdF when he was at Ineos as a good deed for his dom. Kwiatkowski has since won another stage in the Tour... whereas Carapaz has none.

Point being: in a dark karma scenario for Jumbo & Vingegaard, Sepp Kuss gets transformed by this Vuelta win mentally & physically, i.e. becoming a GT contender in his own right next season (Giro probably).

It's the sort of stuff that happens.

It's the CN forum. There's always an asterisk

The team simply caved into marketing and business interests. Cycling wants, needs, a US market, the rest is just drivel.

Perfect winner for the 10th anniversary of Horner's Vuelta.

Now in 10 years we will be celebrating the 20th birthday of Horner's Vuelta and the 10th of Kuss"s. Expect something even more ridiculous to happen... Nicolas Vinokourov to maillot rojo.

Grandpa Valverde will be back kicking asses.

This race has made me miss the individualism of Bala.

That really mediocre pull for Quintana when they were ahead on the last stage of the tour so he could save energy for his podium was magic cycling, just absolutely shameful s*it.

Too many friends nowadays, loads of smiling and backslapping after the stage, they don't make them like they used to, which is why Rui Costa's win was so enjoyable, it stuck out like a sore thumb.

If it would be any other rider it would be hard to justify this. Sepp in my opinion has earned it. So it will fly and in my opinion will be perceived as a genuine GT win without the asterix.

P.S. But i wouldn't sell this as fair play. That would be over stretching it.

To be fair Roglic and Kuss “gifted” Vingegaard 1 minute the other day by not chasing him.

Sorry to get slightly off topic here, but is there a thread that discusses great moments in backstabbing (or at least flicking)-your-teammate cycling history? Would love to read that.

To be really fair that gift came from UAE who's "strategy" was to send the lowest placed of their 4 riders in the GC group up the road on his own to chase Vingegaard. When the prospect of FFB chipping away at his hour and twenty five minute deficit wasn't enough to spur Mas, Landa or the two Bora riders in the group into chasing it was game over sit on your hands for Roglic and Kuss.

Well, though I was not the target person of your Q here, but I could've been. This mainly due to Sepp Kuss own words just days ago - that he just hoped that the strongest rider stood with the right shirt La Roja in Madrid.

But just a little more than a month ago, a certain Jonas interfered in this GT. And his words mingled. Since the 6th stage, Jonas has expressed "I really hope Kuss wins the Vuelta". And so it will be. The leader has the floor. Although he just had to rein in the original leader Primoz, partly by getting ahead of him on the Bejes stage and partly by trying to rein him in at Angliru, where Jonas's "depression" was not due to not being able to change to a dry red jersey, but to the fact that he was unhappy that he couldn't quite rein in Primoz.

Although I have nothing in particular to pin my hopes on, as Jonas seems the strongest, I hope that Primoz goes totally bananas on Saturday. I would do it in his shoes. 2 months ago with the prospect of winning his 4th Vuelta. Now No. 3 on the stool if all goes well. And it only creates even better publicity for the new sponsor if we now have to wear all the nice stiff nod-doll suits. As it will be a show to talk about. But after today, I'm afraid that the boss Jonas and Plugge have spoken to Primoz. Poor thing.

All that said, I'm no less fan of Kuss as the best mountain supporting rider in this year compared to previous many GT's of which he has fulfilled his job exemplary.

My full honest words, now I dunno if that was too much.

As one of the guys 'braying' (or whatever tf that means): Yes.
Yes I do think that.

I really like the guy, but after today, it's only die-hard fans or chauvinists who'll believe he won this Vuelta on his own merit. This is a victory with a big asterisk to it in my book.
