Mandatory 2.1 short italian stage race for Ulissi.

Yep, steady building his name up. But something bigger should come soon. Hopefully.

********

Stage 1a won by Swift, who continues his great form from MSR.

Viviani, Forster, Avila, Belletti, Chicchi, Ponzi, Van Staeyen, Gavazzi, Rossi, etc.

Something unexpected must've happened for them all to miss the top 10.

yep something is definitely missing. Maybe they were all dropped on the mid stage climb or a crash at the businesses end.

Awaiting info.

Sky splitted the peleton on hills. There were 15 riders ahead of the peleton caught in last kilometer. Maybe they weren't able to regroup and some of the sprinters were left behind i guess.

half of those sprinters are better climbers than swift, so seems doubtful. probably a crash or a split from a crash.

A good Swift is also a pretty good climber.

That wouldn't help them if they were in the wrong end of the peloton when the split happened, besides Swift is very good shape right now.

This afternoon team time trial with teams of 4? Can anyone explain the concept?

Weird, an 11km team pursuit.

Will be interesting to see how they choose to split, or if it's decided by the order this morning? I'm presuming Swift, Kennaugh, Cataldo and Kyrienka would be the preferred A team anyway for Sky.

Seem to be quite a few teams who only started with 7 riders. Going to be a miserable afternoon for some of them.

Not sure, the teams will just put the best three together with the main GC man. The other part of the team needs to roll in better than the timecut over 13km. Shouldn't be a problem.

From the Cyclingnews report: "A group of 50 riders finished ahead of the peloton after a climb split the race as they chased down the break of the day."
