Hmm.... not sure about this, but Cippolini's team was excluded the year he was world champion.

That team was Acqua Sapone. He retired because of not being invited for the Tour and then Franco Ballerini conviced him to return to cycling, and also in that year he won the world championship.

And there is no reason he shouldn't be. The best teams should be able to participate in the best races regardless of their UCI classifications. When is the last time a Tour de France champion's team was denied a spot in the Tour de France?

Astana 2008 Sherlock

Or Clemzon, and still do go there (not the smartest school but one of the most fun plus we have great mountain biking)
but anyway there is probably not another example of this happening and there is no reason that Armstrong should be excluded because the French/some of the cycling world hates him.

Another myth. The french doesn't hate him as most of the cycling world doesn't hate him. It's the contrary my friend, they all love him and think he's a pure virgin.

Yea, I have friends who went there. You should have gone to App (I did) though. Prettier and better mountain biking, but not the best school either...I mean, before Ms Teen SC decided to try acting etc, she was set to go to App...I was embarrassed.

My dad bought a tie-dye t-shirt from a dirty hippie in Boone when we went to visit (my grandparents lived on Beech Mt for years). Looked like a pretty fun place.

You have no idea, and I have only a hazy memory...part of that is that it was 20 years ago, but part of it isn't...

ASO exclude LA's team? No way. They love money as much as anyone.

I can't believe that Radio Shack stays in business, let alone has the cash to sponsor a team?

Do any of you shop there?

I don't even know anybody who shops there.

Are there any Radio Shacks in Europe anyway?

I looked at the 2008 annual report for Radio Shack;
Sales $300 million
Advertising budget $214 million

Radio Shack is profitable.

Radio Shack is also a retailer of Garmin products.

So you're saying their advertising budget is north of 70% of their sales? Not profits (that would be bad enough), but sales????:eek::eek::eek:

Let me just call my broker to invest all my retirement savings into RadioShack put options.

The way I read their annual report (available here) they had $4,224,500,000 of sales and advertised for $214,000,000 (or 5% of revenue) in 2008.

That's quite a difference to the original post. We just need to find out how much of those 214m goes into the sponsorship deal. Team budgets range from 5 to 30m a year. There'll be co sponsors, but on a lower level than the title sponsor. I'd like to find out on what kind of budget Team RadioShack is planning to ride.

I live in Australia and I had never heard of them until they were going to sponsor Lance's team.

what is the average cost to sponsor a team for a year? Anyone know?

How long is a piece of string? But for Lance, I would say the budget would be US$10m-15m. Although Radio Shack would be putting down the most amount of money (say $10m) and then the other sponsors would be chipping in (Nike, Trek, SRAM, Bontrager, Giro, Oakley etc.).

Without going back over yesterday's news.
That was the ASO, Patrice Clerc version. Very hard line anti-doping.
Vino popped at the Tour, plus Astana had the worst doping record for 2007 of any team.
Nothing to do with Lance.
They have all the old L'Equipe stuff, so they could have made him "unwelcome", this year, but didn't.
US market. ASO, Tour of Cali, Lance is a plus.
