25 points for first place finish on each stage. Plus intermediate points, which Cav is unlikely to survive to in either of these two stages

So Jrod needs to get 2 third places at least... Don't see it happening to be honest.

Or a first place and a tenth place, but still... 2 tough mountain stages and I still expect Jrod to crack some day.

Cav needs to work for Captain Uranium at least early in the stages to conserve his energy to try to get him ahead of J-Rod.

Don't reacall a recent Giro that the Red was still so up in the air this late.

Yeah. This happened in the Tour of Pologne 2 years back. The grupetto had to wait on the side of the road to let the leaders pass. Check the stage Mollema won it happened there

Also Coppi e Bartali 2010, when Sella lapped a bunch of people. They were asked to pull over to let him past, then they were pulled out of the race at the line and not allowed to start the next day.

You just wait. Purito's gonna get top-10 in the time-trial and win that red jersey :D :D

Seriously though, I don't think he can be too bothered by winning it. Couple of third places probably mean he's gonna be very close to a much bigger prize.

Ok! Nvm - I found it - when I let google find me points "classification" like it wanted to do, I hit gold.

wikipedia.org/Points_classification_in_the_Giro

So Rodriquez can hammer Cav in the next 2 days. Good luck, Mark!

This is the points situation worked out by Teamskyfans:-

Teamskyfans.com
The race for Red
1st Cavendish 138 pts
2nd Rodriguez 109 pts

29pts difference.. Rodriguez requires 30 pts to guarantee red.

If over the remaining mountain stages J-Rod wins a stage he will only need to place 13th or better in the other to win red.. If he fnishes 2nd in a stage then 7th or better on the other will secure red. 3rd, and 4th or better on the other will secure red.. Placing 4th or lower on both remaining mountain stages will ensure Cavendish wins red.

Are there any intermediate sprints in these stages that Cav could take?

Definitely not tomorrow, Saturday he's have to survive Passo Del Tonnale, Aprica and couple smaller climbs, so probably no chance either

When they are tied, Purito will get the jersey as far as I know because his total stage placements are better than him

No, Cav has more stage wins.

In TDU Gerrans beat Valverde even though he got no stage win but Valverde had one, and in volta catalunya people got sorted with their stage placements as well

Those were GC wise but even so it may very well apply to this competition as well.

Actually he is right

2.6.017 In the event of a tie in the general individual classification by points, the following criteria shall be
applied in order until the riders are separated:
1. number of stage wins;
2. number of wins in intermediate sprints counting for the general classification on points;
3. general individual classification by time.

Well, I think he's earned it by suffering through to the end, however Cav having this jersey would almost certainly mean that Purito will not win or even podium this Giro, so I'm rooting against Cav here

Here we go:

"If two or more cyclists have the same number of points, the ranking is determined by the most number of stage victories, followed by the most number of intermediate sprint victories, followed by the lowest time in the general classification."

So as Elp said Cav would win effectively if they tied, unless Rodriguez wins both the next two stages.

Well if he wins next two stages, he will win unless cav comes 2nd or something in time trial :D

"Slight Off-Topic"

Someone said (dont remember who) failing to place a rider in top 50 is harder than to win the race itself.

Best placed guy in Greenedge:
120 Fumiyuki Beppu (Jpn) Orica GreenEdge Cycling Team 2:42:09

So how hard is this :p

It's very tough to see how Cavendish will pick up any more points.

The first climb tomorrow is relatively manageable, but either there will be a break already or people will attack on the climb. If Sky ride fast enough on the climb to bring the break or attackers back before the first sprint just 10km later, they will presumably drop Cavendish.

About the best option I can see for him is to try to get into the break, just as far as the first sprint point and then knock it off. I can't see Katusha chasing hard because they have bigger fish to fry.

Even still though, it seems like a pretty tenuous hope. At least some of the people going in breaks over the next couple of days will be very good climbers, given the profiles, and they will want to keep a strong pace over the first climb to build their lead. Whether he's in a break or in a peloton which is actually trying to chase down a break it would be very tough for him to stick the pace up any real climb.

It's more likely that a break takes points from Purito than that Cavendish gains more himself.
