If Basso hopes for the win [given his Giro merits anything else shouldn't motivate him], he has to implement something extraordinary, as Schleck did on Izoard, as Sastre tried to do on Port de Larrau, etc. I hope Liquigas will explode the peloton on Passo Pampeago yet and further Basso will begin to starve into surrender. If this doesn't happen, he will just take the stage putting into Purito and Hesjedal 15-20 sec.

I originally stated i thought Frank Shleck could win this stage. However he is not here any more.
Therefore i shall tip Pozzovivo ( who clings somehow onto Basso ). JROD and Hesjedal to fight it out for 3rd and 4th. Scarponi and Uran to trail in a bit later.

I think Pozzovivo will attack and only Basso will be able to follow with the other top riders finishing 45sec + down.

If Pozzo is in the same form as yesterday, he will kick ***. To me, he looked like the strongest of the group, easily putting some time into Uran and Scarponi in the last 500 meters of the Giau.

What???? I' wrote a presentation for this one in January. Now we post stage threads 2-3 days before? I also wrote one for La Toussuire. Should I put it now to be sure? That's it, I stop writing stage presentations.

True but out of the 6 dudes they were the weakest.

Pozzovivo for the win.

At this point Basso and Purito should just focus on putting time into Hesjedal.

I've got a bit of a question.
Since the riders are going up Pampeago twice I suppose there is a chance/risk that the riders in the front will catch some of the riders in the back. What would happen then?
Is there even a possibility that the front riders will start their second ascent before the grupetto even starts its first?

No chance at all.
It's a 40 kms long loop, more than 1 hour to do it.

Not really any possibilty unless Guardini takes it really really easy, especially as any riders being caught in such fashion would certainly finish outside the time limit X2

They would have to be 41km down to get caught, won't be happening Viking. Would be funny if it did though!

No not really because it would take the lead guys a good 40 minutes to get from the summit of the Pampeago to the base of the Pampeago. If they were to catch anybody on the second ascent then those guys would not even make the time cut, they would have just abandoned before that would happen though.

Okay, didn't know how long the loop was...

Then what would happen? Would the grupetto simply be told the stop and let the front pass?

I think no one ever conceived this chance.
They probly wouldn't know what to do. :D
Edit:

Yeah. This happened in the Tour of Pologne 2 years back. The grupetto had to wait on the side of the road to let the leaders pass. Check the stage Mollema won it happened there

Somebody help me please - how many red jersey points are on offer for these mountain stages? I can not remember - and a quick google does not tell me.

edit - see next post!

25 points for first place finish on each stage. Plus intermediate points, which Cav is unlikely to survive to in either of these two stages

Ok! Nvm - I found it - when I let google find me points "classification" like it wanted to do, I hit gold.

So Rodriquez can hammer Cav in the next 2 days. Good luck, Mark!

It's not over. If Basso and Pozzovivo both put time into JRod tomorrow, he'd get a maximum of 16 points. He might in turn try attacking the next day and finally have an off day by overcooking himself, and he then got passed by at least 4 cyclists he would get only 12 points and still be 1 point behind Cav.

I know everyone has been complaining about the parcours, but I'm actually really enjoying the fact that everything is still on the line, with just enough action in the first two weeks to give hints about who is good, but nothing definitive. We still don't know who is the strongest man in the race.
