Boonen should never has wasted energy trying to attack. He should have saved that for the Cancellera attack and stayed with him and refuse to do any work. Then he could hopefully out doing him in the sprint.
Just because this strategy did not work last week doesn't mean it was the wrong strategy. It was his only hope.
Tom is a "passista" with a good sprint, Fabian is a "passista" cronoman. Consequently with Sparticus on form as he was, Tommke should have made sure of only one thing today: that Cancellara didn't get one meter away from his front wheel ever in the last part of the race. And then out sprint him in Roubaix.
His useless attacks from 60 K out only made him have to take a rest for a moment on the 15th wheel. At precisely that moment, and none other, Sparticus followed the surge of a trio, looked back, saw Tommke was gaped, and opened up the gas as only he can do in situations like this.
Game over.
The Belgian press is going to rip Boonen apart this week that's for sure.
