I'm starting to think it's because of the Vuelta.
Last year he attacked in San Luca, and yesterday he didn't on the penultimate climb.

We're only two stages in, but the feeling is he's even more conservative than last year.
And in Dauphiné, he already let it slip that this year's World Championships are complicated due to the "schedule".
He wasn't conservative last year. He attacked on San Luca, Galibier, gravel stage, Lioran (too early IMO), he attacked every single mountain stage (except the last one) and he attacked a stage just to test Vingegaard in the third week (the stage Remco gained time). He was everything but conservative.

This year there is no Galibier on stage four either.

They were more conducive stages for attacking.Yesterday's was similar to San Luca, but he was more conservative.

It was not that similar. And Vingegaard isn't coming off injury in very uncertain form. And even last year when he attack on San Luca he left it pretty late on the climb which resulted in the group behind being all clustered together.

On the Galibier, he waited until the last kilometer of the climb.

I think he was quite conservative until Lioran, considering there were more stages to attack than in this Tour and that Pogacar tended to be less conservative.

Yesterday, he was excessively conservative by his standards. He limited himself to the final sprint. He didn't do anything else, just lean on his team. That said, he looked very easy, so it wasn't because of shape.

Pog knows the plan and his team knows the plan.
The plan is the new TRIPLE CROWN - Tour-Vuelta-Worlds.
The plan is not attacking like a lunatic on some hills. If the other teams deliver him for a stage win good for him. But UAE won't chase for peanuts.
Pogacar wants Stage 12, Stage 16 and Stage 18. If other teams help him for more stages it's just a bonus.
That's it.

I also believe Pogacar wants to redeem himself in these stages, as he did in Dauphiné on Combloux.
Even if it meant doing a bad time trial.

Maybe but I'm not too worried since Pogacar is probably in very good shape.
I think he is more mature and is trying to save energy for the second and third week.

I was thinking to myself for some time that he might just go through week one without using too.much energy, blow everyone apart, like Froome, in the Pyrenees and save as much energy as possible for the Vuelta.

What he said at the Dauphiné was quite striking to me. He said the World Championship this year is complicated due to the trip and schedule; that only makes sense if he does the Vuelta.

I think he prefers to win WC, but he also has to win the three GT. Although the Vuelta has been won by very veteran riders and Pogacar could win it even if he's in worse shape, you never know if he might have accidents and if he won't compete in 3 or 4 years. It's a long time in the sport; they have to live in the present.

And of the upcoming World Championships, it seems Rwanda will be the one to be sacrificed.

Sallanches is Hinault's WC, and Pogacar is quite mythomaniac; he'll want to win that World Championship. Canada also suits him well, and Merckxs won a WC in Montreal, although more riders could win this circuit.

It seems he's prioritized winning the Vuelta as soon as possible and focusing on the World Championships in the next two years.

He could wait four years because the World Championships in Denmark and UAE will be for sprinters. But as I say, it's a long time in the sport. He could've an accident, and winning the Vuelta will take those decision-making problems away from him in the future.
He knows Canada's circuit and Sallanches.
He doesn't know the one in Rwanda, and Slovenia is weak team this year. He'll have considered that this is the year to risk not winning the World Cup.

Besides, winning Tour-Vuelta is physically more difficult than preparing for the World Championships after the Tour.
It's better to do it in his prime than in 2028, when he doesn't know how he'll be.

Galibier had a strong headwind and only the final km was steep enough. For that reason he waited for the last km, it wouldn't be wise to attack on a headwind in a 5% slope, specially with Vingegaard behind.

No, he wasn't conservative at all. He attacked almost every stage with some type of difficulty (gravel, hills, mountains).

I hope so. If he wins those stages more the MTT, he will win in dominant fashion once again.

Tomorrow, will he go for the yellow? Or he will not attack in order to not wear the polka dot jersey?

If yesterday is anything to go by they want to win but with the minimum effort - but you never know with Pogi. If it was a classic he'd attack on the final climbs and probably win - but it's stage 4 of a 21 stage Tour.
